I'm into lap steel guitar and loving it. To add to my love of all the steel guitar I've heard over the years and inspired by the likes of Lloyd Green, Buddy Cage, Jerry Garcia and many others, I'd like to add a pedal steel to my learning curve. I'd like to experience getting minors and bends by foot instead of by bar slanting although I'm addicted to non-pedal steel. Is this a good beginner's model?

Hi Rob, these are very cool things for not a lot of money, but if you are serious about getting into pedal steel the six string won't take you very far. I don't see the six string so much as a beginners model of pedal steel - to me its just a cool little guitar that can cover some basic pedal steel sounds. That said I keep toying with the idea of getting one of these because they look like a lot of fun. |

Are these 6 stringers set up like a regular guitar with some pedals/levers simulating bends on a regular guitar? Seems like it would be real good for that. I wouldn't buy one to learn pedal steel as it is commonly used today. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . contact Jerry Fessenden and get an S10, you will never look back, the tone of these guitars will prompt you to never get up from your steel.
I know, I have had several, and still got one!

That is the way they are set up Richard. They are strings three, four, five, six, eight and 10 of our E9th tuning. The first pedal pulls the B strings to C#. And the G# strings to A. E major open to A major with the pedals Rob. |

I think Jerry designed the Six-Shooter for the rock guitarist to be able to play the most elementary steel licks without having to actually learn the instrument. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Thanks all,
Good advice Blair, Ed, I'll wait until I can afford one of the big boys.

Then, I think I'll take a ride in "Geronimo's Cadillac" down to Texas and catch me some licks from Herb here! Herb, do you play a Fessenden? Listened to a lot of music of yours. Love your stuff! Did you ever guest with CC and the Airmen on that "Live at the Armadillo World Headquarters" album? I swear I heard Commander say you're name on that record. My memory however, ahem...
Thanks Ed,
I'll take the advice. |

Hey Jimmie,
Good day from Canada. I like the sound of a Fessendon guitar (see former post) and I bet ya that the little Mica 6-stringer sounds real good and would be a good transition piece to a bigger pedal steel. However, I am still trying to get even close to mastering the lap steel guitar, but when the time is right, I'll give you a shout. The bigger one rips and I just might go right to that Fessenden. Good price for a new pedal steel. Later,

I have owned 4 Fessenden guitars and played them a lot, though I currently don't have one on the instrument list. Thanks for the compliments, though.
I did play once or twice with CC and the Airmen at the Armadillo WHQ, though not on the album to which you refer. This was back in 1973, I was backing Ronstadt on a one-nighter; Cody's band was on the show and we used them, though with Bobby Black standing right next to me, I wondered what I was doing onstage. _________________ My rig: Infinity and Telonics.

Yeah,
That could be double dynamite Herb. Bobby Black and yourself. Guess it must be hard to bone in on him! I think I remember the song I'm thinking of was off the one with "Beat me Daddy, Eight to the Bar" and of course that old Bob Wills "Hot Rod Lincoln". It was during "Beat me Daddy..." that I remember a Herb being called upon by Cody (live from the A.W.H. record). But now that I think of it it might have been a sax player with the name Stein?
I won the ugly car contest at the Majestics Car Show in my hometown and the local radio station covered it and they would play Cody's version of Hot Rod Lincoln while I revved up the motor (a 396 Y-block in a '56 Lincoln Premiere Coupe). I had 2 of em', one was two tone green and the other was hot pink (I think they called it Flamingo Pink, white roof, green tinted windows and a chrome dash, I kid you not. How ugly is that! Not! However it was a bit of a Flinstone buggy after sitting in a farmer's field for 25 odd years (1981 at the time).
Our band was just playing an acoustic set and we played "Geronimo's Cadillac just for fun. I have to dust off (uhh, I don't have those records anymore). So you consider a Fessendon to be a decent sounding steel eh? Well, for now back to my bar slants.
Good talkin' to you Herb. |
