| Hey folks....Newbie here....I hope I can tap some of your brains to get me started. Living on Long Island NY my resources are rather limited. Been playing guitar for over 40 years and always loved country music. (I play a Fender Nashville Clarence White/ Gene Parsons tele with a B bender and am ok @ slide guitar in the Duane Allman school) but I am now on a new planet. I bought a Carter starter and cant wait to get started.....any advice? |

1: Don't give up because of the deficiencies in the guitar. We'll all wish you'd have joined a few weeks ago. Your guitar has mushy stops and kinda a flabby feel. It's enough to learn on, but about the time you get it sorted out, you'll be aggravated by the construction.
2: Welcome!! These things are a ball to play, but a bear to learn.
3: The forum store sells a book, Pedal Steel Guitar, by Winnie Winston and Bill Keith. Worth every penny.
4: there are some youtube channels with lots of tutorials. I recommend Mickey Adams and Bobbe Seymour.
Welcome to the madness of pedal steel guitar.

The Winnie Winston book is aces. I am a huge fan.
But you can't overstate the value of live help, right at the beginning, to help give you confidence in forging ahead, knowing your effort is going to good technique and useful practice. |

I found the Carter a fine little guitar. The main problem was with the F lever ( raises E's to F, LKL ) and that fixes with a #4-40 allen head screw plus a flat-head Phillips screw for the stop.
It has limited adjustability, and my new guitar has already made a difference in my playing, but the Carter served for years.
And, IMO - it sounds quite good.
Do you have the DVD with it? The DVD is a very good thing to have. |
