I'VE FINALLY DONE IT!

Even though I've played steel for thirty years, I've never had the nerve to tinker around underneath, and always preferred to put the job in capable hands.

Well, Bruce sent me the stuff I needed to lower 5,6 and 10 on my LKV (previously only lowering 6) and, after two cups of very strong 'Cafe Bustelo', I found the mental energy to take it on.

Of course, he also gave me precise instructions regarding the location (and re-location in some cases) of the various rods, but I can't believe I did it - and in less than an hour!!!

So - send those P/Ps to me for a total re-build - now I'm a 'steel-tech'(just kidding) ....

Bruce told me it would be a piece of cake (as did Jeff Lampert, by the way), and I know you 'old hands' out there are just yawning with indifference, but I had to mark my achievement on here.

To Bud Vandenberg (who was kind enough to offer to do it for me next time he visited): I still want to do my LeGrande, so maybe you could oblige....?

There's a down-side to this - I've lost my 'split-tune' facility on my Bs to Bbs (RKL/'C' pedal), and I suppose that's the trade-off. Is there a way to restore this?

If not, I guess I'll have to fine-tune my half-pedal technique - in the words of the late great Peter Sellers on his 1959 recording (he played a luckless rock'n'roll singer approaching 'pop' senility at age eighteen):

"So much to learn, and so little time...."

If you got this far, thanks for your patience !

Bud can handle the job on the LeGrande. He put a vertical on by himself and said it is
working great. He knows where to get the parts too.

You can restore the splits with extra raise rods on the B-A# lever, like they used to be done before split screws.

Roger, like Jim said, you need another pull. Have Bruce send you another pull rod, clip, and washer. You won't need a bell crank. Install the new rod through an available 5th string RAISE hole, using the lowest bell crank position (least leverage) on the SAME bell crank that lowers the 5th string from B to Bb. First tune your C pedal alone. Then tune the split between pedal C and the LKV using the lower rod. After you have the split in tune, you will find that the LKV by itself is lowering the string but is not in tune. Make the tuning adjustment using the extra raise rod.

Hey Roger & Jerry:
Thanks for the vote of confidence: I do a lot better on airplanes and engines but then they just fly and don't make music.

Thanks, Jeff (and Jim). Jeff, your step-by-step instruction is much appreciated!

You too, Bud - see you in a couple of weeks.

(Bud's coming to see our last 'Patsy' show here in Naples; I still have the Emmons set up at the theatre...)

I must say that, much as I love my Emmons LGIII, those 'C' clips are enough to put you in an asylum!

PS:
Jeff - can I take it that I'll need TWO pull rods if I want both 5 AND 10 to 'split' properly?

Roger, I only split my 5th string, but I assume you would do the exact same process to split the 10th string which means you would need a total of two pull rods, one for each string.
