A friend of mine just added a 1/2 tone 6th string raise on C6th. What do you guys think? It gives a major 7th chord... Talk to me now...

I lower the 5th down a step but I've been contemplating changing over to raising the 6th a half step instead - like your friend.
I use that pull all the time. |

A number of players have had this for years. However, most couple it with other changes such as lowering the 2nd string to an Eb or a D.
I have had it for a long time. I could not live without it. One of my favorite uses for it is to engage it AND the lever that lowers the 3rd string to a B, then pick strings 3, 5 and 6; then let off both of them to take you from a V7 chord to a I chord.
As you say, it does produce another major 7th chord (if you dont change the second string with it), but I have never seen a need for that major 7th since pedal 4, 7 or the knee lever lowering C to B handles that department pretty well.
If you add the lowering of the 2nd string to an Eb with that change, it gives you an inversion of what pedal 6 gives. In fact some have labeled that knee lever "upside down 6" lever. And it provides a great "blues" lever because it resolves to a IV7 chord at any fret. Used extensively in blues type songs.

Middle E to F. I have it. I mainly use it to get rid of that low major 7th, when I want a real major triad.

I have that on my 4th pedal - the same pedal also lowers the 2nd a half-step, and raises 10 a step.
I moved my old 4th pedal (As to B) to a vertical.

If you raise the 2nd string half tone to F along with the 6th string, you go into a nice subdominant chord.....al

I lower the G to F, on LKL. That along with with lowering the A's to Ab's and pedals 5 and 6 gives you a full A minor chord at the 4th fret, a whole other position to work from. |

David Mason-That is a good pull too. Very important in more ways than one. With Pedal 6 it gives me the tonic to a F7 chord. I use it in "Satan Doll" the F9th to F7.
There is oh so many ways to go, it depends what the individual wants to go with the limited pedals and knee levers available ....al

I considered starting a thread on this a while back. Mike Cass added this to my 9 and 9 on a LV. I don't know how I would do without this now. Like Bob I sometimes use it to get rid of the maj 7. This tonic/root is very useful in melodies frequently. Before adding it I had to decide whether to lower the G to F or Raise the E to F. I prefer the raise because of the chord voicings it offers. I combine this with A's to Bb for IVsus4 chords (string 9 being the root). Also with Pedal 6 and A's to Bb for a I7sus4 (string 10 being the root). I have found this useful all over the place. Also- on a Push Pull it not only eliminates the dom 7 in the middle of the IV chord, but also offers a really nice whole note bend when used with pedal 6. |

I just put 6 to F on LKR with 2 Abs and a G on top.
It is a very hip chord in several voicings,
It strums a serious tension ending chord or transition. With that G on top it really makes the hairs on your neck stand up and wiggle.
And some lower groupings have cool sounds too. Thanks to Doug Jernigan for the suggestion.
I much prefer the 1st G vs. the 1st D. I tried it once before, and came back to it. I have a half lower on P8 with it. |

David D., if you put a half-step raise for that high G on pedal 5, then 5 will resolve that major 7th on top along with 6, G to F and the lowered A's to Ab's. And 5 and RKL give you an E major triad on the top three strings. [This message was edited by David Mason on 05 October 2003 at 12:06 AM.] |

but with Ab's and F on LKR and the 5 off the otherway, I nearly fall off the stool getting it, literally.
I like what it gets with the half lower on the high G anyway. |
