Just about to tune-up my (new-to-me)10-string PSG and take the plunge....anyone tell me why I shouldn't tune to C6th (as on my 6-string lap-steel) instead of E9th?
C6th would mean I could switch from one to the other and wouldn't be able to blame a different tuning for my slow progress!
But everything I read seems to prioritise E9th.
Explain slowly please, I'm primarily a banjer-picker. Enough said? |

There's certain genres that seem to pop out of one tuning moreso than another.
First, define what you are interested in playing, and then select your tuning. |

How are the pedals set up? If it has 3 floor pedals that is the standard "ABC" (or CBA is its set up for the Day setup) E9th setup. If it has knee levers they are probably set up for the E9th.
99% of the "Nashville" country is E9th.
If its mechanically set up for E9th, you would have to change the floor and knee levers for the C6th. |

Mostly slower Country Ballads....I'll Hold You In My Heart 'Til I Can Hold You In My Arms, Beneath Still Waters, etc.......and maybe some mid-tempo stuff...Dear John I've Sent Your Saddle Home, Jambalaya...
Does that help? (Ancient Chinese Proverb: One song title is worth a thousand words) |

Doh! It's presently set for E9th, so that's made that decision! (Three pedals, two levers) |

The knee lever that lowers the E strings gives you a B6th tuning. It's C6th at the first fret. Everything you know on the lap steel still applies. You just have to move everything one fret higher.
It's pretty hard to switch an E9th pedal steel to C6th, especially for a beginner. I wouldn't recommend it. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |
