Could some of you non-pedal gurus (Mike or Doug,,,anyone??) show me a good facsimile for the intro to Nightlife ,,,,8 string C6 ( 6-1-3-5-6-1-3-5)?? |

Just off the top of my head - I would think you are going to need to go with C6/A7 or at least C13 to get those important dominate sounds. _________________ '65 Sho-Bud D-10 Permanent • '54 Fender Dual-8 • Clinesmith T-8 • '38 Ric Bakelite • '92 Emmons D-10 Legrande II |

The chords from Buddy Emmons original tablature:
Dmaj7, F9, Bbmaj7, Ebaug11, Dmaj7
The Ebaug11 is basically a substitute for a V chord. So the basic progression is: 1, 3b, 5#, 5
It would be hard to get the full chords on non-pedal steel, unless you're playing a diatonic tuning. We would play partial chords on most tunings.
Another thing... the A note is played at the Top of each chord voicing (the highest note in each chord), and that’s an important part of the sound. So that further limits our options for the positions on lap steel.
I would keep it simple and stripped down. Something like this:
C6 tuning
Here's quick video: the intro, the chords in the verse, some slants, etc... just lap steel into a Princeton Reverb, no volume pedal, no anything!

Pretty cool, Doug! You inspired me to try to see what I could come up with in an attempt to get fuller chords on 6-string C6th using my big Pedal Steel bar rather than my usual lap bars. The reverse slants seem playable in tune with the larger bar. You pull the third string up a whole step to the major 7th at the end.

i dont play C6, but i retuned my underarm guitar to look for the Eb#11 chord. i would play the 1st and 2nd string at the 5th fret and slant the 4th string to the 6th fret or pull it behind the bar. that would give you the top of the Eb#11 {Db F A} and then move to the ninth fret strings 2 3 and 4 for the I chord. that work for you C6ers???
the #11 chord is what makes the intro. you leave it out...it just does not work for me. |

i dont read tab or play C6th.....takes me a while to figure it out..lol! the fourth string should be slanted or pulled up 1/2 step to the 6th fret. its a Db right?? you want from low to high to hear Db F A. that work??
would it be
1....5
2....5
3.....
4....6 slant/pull????
or your way!!

Same note... Db... either slant back and pick string 3 or slant up and pick string 4. I find it easier to slant back and use the rounded nose of the bar to play the upper two strings in tune. |
see....you know C6 much better than i do!
the I chord at the end....can you also use that for the opening chord?? |

Probably, but it's an add9 chord. This would be Dmaj7, no root, but the chord doesn't sound right to me without the root:
------
--9---
--9---
------
--9---
------
This would a fatter way to play the opening chord. It's just two 5ths (octaves) and a third, no root:
------
--9---
--9---
------
-----
--9---
I'll check back later... I have a bunch of guitar lessons to teach today, Cheers. _________________ My Site / My YouTube Channel

My F9 sub should read 556 .... and very nice, Mike. What would you do with 6? Doug, I have GHS's custom C6th set on my guitar at the moment. It is a bit light for my taste but it allows that whole step pul without dislocating your finger. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com

The voicings that I'm hearing in Buddy's recording contain the following (for the Eb#11 I used a different slant, but same notes)
Tab: |
.....DMa9....F9.....BbMa7...Eb#11
E------------------------------
C------9----------------------
A-------------12-------------12
G------9------12---------------
E--------------------18------11-
C-------------12-----18--------
A------9-----------------------
F--------------------18------10
