Has anyone ever had any sort of failure with their zirc? Dropping & breaking or chipping? Scratching or abrading?

I ask simply because it is my absolutely favorite bar and I would buy a backup while I still can....if there were a reason. If failure were a very long shot, buying a backup would be overkill---unnecessary insurance. My bar looks brand new without any scuffs so I have no cause for concern.

Anyone?

I bought four while they were being offered, partly just in case as Jon has stated, and partly because as hard as it seemed to get them made, they may not be made again.

I have two white and two black, I'll probably hold them as long as I'm around, then my siblings or whatever can do with them what they want.

Exactly my thinking re: when will anyone make another run? I recall that it was a considerable investment, up front, with a long slow payback. So I'd buy one from the dwindling stock while I can---except that I don't need more than one. Unless someone can scare me into needing a backup.

I bought 2 back in '97 when they were first offered. This was when they were engraving the buyer's names and a serial number on the backs of the bars. I received one with my name, and one that was blank.

Shortly thereafter, I received a 3rd bar in the mail. It was sent by mistake. Now legally, I could have kept it, and if this sent by was a big corporation, I would have. But this was Bill and Ed. I just gave the bar back to Bill when I saw him.

7 years later, I was ar a show, and Jody Sanders said he wanted to show me something, and lo and behold, he had a a bar with my name on it. It had been sitting in hie paca-seat all that time.

What had happened was that Bill or Ed gave Jody the bar to try out, and he forgot about it. I showed the bar to Bill, and told him I wanted to buy it, but he refused to take my money. Instead, he told me to take this bar home, and give the one that was blank to John Hughey, who wanted one.

I don't know who was happier. John because he got the bar, or me because he was using my former bar.

I like to think that every time he used it, he and I ware symbolically shaking hands.

I have 3 - one 7/8 x 3-3/8 in white, two 15/16 x 3-1/2 in black. I have dropped at least one of them hard on concrete, others dropped perhaps not as hard, but absolutely no issue - you wouldn't be able to tell by looking at them that they weren't brand new.

But I would be worried if I didn't have at least two of the large black ones, in case I either lost one or someone ripped one off. The thing is, I don't think anybody will ever make these again. Perhaps forever is too long a forecast horizon. But I can't imagine who else would make these. I know Ed has said numerous times that this is the end of the line - e.g., http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=234205

...with Dave having said the above, I would suggest avoiding a drop on your toes, don't think that would turn out too well.....

I do love mine! It's by far my favorite.
Used a lot and dropped it a few times: absolutely perfect; no dents, cracks or scratches!

As Toby Keith says: "I love this bar"! LOL Razz Very Happy

I just purchased a back up for mine. Just in case of damage or loss.

It would seem we all share our appreciation of the zirc. As per Dave M---yes, that is entirely what motivated me to make this post. This is the bar of my choosing. When this batch is gone, there will be no more.
I've just emailed to check availability of my 15/16 x 3 1/2. I've decided to cover myself with a backup.

If the day ever comes when someone near & dear really really wishes to have one, I'll have one to give them (assuming that my #1 continues to keep on going.)
