Need pickup rewound for '53 Stringmaster. Is there a consensus as to who does the best work? |

I'd start by trying Jason Lollar or Lindy Fralin |

It is my understanding that Lollar no longer rewinds, he has a stringmaster pickup that calls itself a "sonic upgrade" but there are no sound samples. The question for me is do you want a sound as close as possible to the original or a different and usually better sound in a stringmaster bobbin. Look up Vintage Vibe pickups, Pete is great to work with. |

I've had Jerry Wallace with TruTone do some rewinding of Stringmaster pickups for me. |

Facing the same problem, I settled on replacing both pickups with Seymour Duncan Antiquity replacements...they fit perfectly and sound just like they're supposed to...
$130 dollars via Guitar Center...5 days delivery... 10 minutes to install...

Are you sure about that, Stephen - I've seen a few Stringasters online that were supposedly '53s (including a couple sold on this forum) and there's a guy on the British Steelies Society who says he has a Stringmaster that is dated October 1953 (it's definitely one of the early ones, no blend wheel, chrome pickup covers, lollipop tuners, 26" scale).
I know you are one of the most knowledgeable people on here (I always enjoy your posts) so please don't be offended, but I am just curious, as we all are, about the history of these great instruments and, given that information from Fender is "sparse" to say the least, I wondered what you based this on? |

Yes... I was mistaken! They did come out in '53... I've been a year behind all this time. My pushbutton D8 is a '55... I've read that pushbuttons came out in '54, I'd thought '55. I tried to find a catalog online, no luck there. Most Fender books are sparse on the steels, but there was one on Google that did cite '53 for the first long-scale SM's. _________________ New FB Page: Lap Steel Licks And Stuff: https://www.facebook.com/groups/195394851800329 |

Thanks for that post, Erv... looks like '54 was no blend wheel, long scale... unless pushbutton shorter SM's came out in late '54. _________________ New FB Page: Lap Steel Licks And Stuff: https://www.facebook.com/groups/195394851800329 |

Are pickups still being rewound at Jerry Wallaces' shop since his death? Thanks. |
