I've posted my transcription of the solo on my blog. It is a simple C6 with a high E, so it can be played on a 6 string lap steel, as well.

Hopefully, I can keep up the desire to do this and maybe get around to putting out another folio. I know John would have loved it.

It's a shame there isn't an accompanying video of him playing this on his steel. Amazing talent!

After sitting down to play with this now, I made a change in the first measure--the last note sliding into measure 2. Sounds more like what JM played and is easier to execute.

Mike:

Dance-O-Rama was released in 1955. I was under the impression that Joaquin's best work with Spade Cooley was in the late 40's but if this was recorded when he got back with Cooley in the 50's he obviously still had that magic! Is there a source for the other 3 tracks?

A1 Sparkling Silver Bells
A2 Charmaine
B1 Y'Ready

Thanks!

The whole record sound like Murph to me.
I've never heard Boggs play like that.

There are 8 cuts on the Dance-O-Rama record. I'm a long time fan/student of that record. It's all Joaquin and he uses several different tunings on it.

Fidoodlin' was Spade's last session and featured JM on a few cuts, but by this time he had already started to become more of a chordal type player (which I also love). Western Swing was pretty much dead at this point. I think Dance-O-Rama was Joaquin's last stand as a single note monster.

I have the same question!

Thanks a lot Mike your good work! A second edition of Joaquin book would be more than welcome!

It's a pretty rare recording. I found on ebay for 2.99 years ago, but I see it listed every so often for a lot more than that. It's a 78 sized record played at 33 1/3 rpm.
All of the Dance O Rama series are must haves. ... especially Tex Williams, Billy Gray and Bob Wills.

You would think with all the historic Bear Family box sets they would have Spade Cooley.

I always wondered why Merle Travis & Murph never recorded together - that would have been nice. Esp back then with as much live radio transcriptions as those artists were doing.

Merle and Joaquin did record together. One or 2 sessions, I think--Merle was the leader.
