If you have a smartphone or tablet, Cleartune costs 3 bucks. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Both of Scott's selections are excellent.
The Korg is cheap and simple---I've used earlier versions of it for years.
The Seiko is similar to a Seiko I got from b0b here from the forum store (no longer in stock).
It has the added feature of giving you a numerical read-out of deviation, in cents, of how far off you are from straight-up. Very useful. |

Thanks Scott and Jon for the heads up on the Korg ca-40 tuner. Ordered one from MF. Works good for less than $20. |

Not sure if you have an iphone or not but if you do, peterson has a strobosoft app for 9.99 that is great. They also sell an adapter cable that lets you plug in direct to the iphone. so for about 30 bucks total you have a peterson tuner!! ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) _________________ 1967 Emmons Bolt On, 1995 Mullen PRP 3x5,Nashville 112, JOYO Digital Delay, Goodrich Volume Pedal, Livesteel Strings |

I would also mention the Boss TU-12, sometimes called a TU-12H. It is a tuner I have used for years, and I am used to the needle positions for my own tuning method.
With that said...
I am also a fan of any tuner that shows the +/-Cents in numeric form.
It makes it super easy to tune to Larry Bells Chart, or any Cents chart, (custom / home-made or otherwise).
I now have a few different versions of the Seiko that have that numeric readout.
I recently picked up a Seiko ST-747 in a used shop for $8 bucks (James Taylor has a tuning video on You-Tube using this tuner).
The SAT-800 is great.
I can tune to this chart at the bottom of this page very easily with this tuner:
http://www.larrybell.org/id32.htm
This image is taken from the 'net (the display shows a Bb-note), but, say you want to tune your F-lever 12-Cents-flat.
Just look at that number in the lower left corner.
I don't even use the needle, just that number.

Thanks for posting the link to the SAT800 Scott.
I've had the 747 for years, never had a problem, just got a SAT 800, looks like I'm gonna like it as well, like the backlit feature, also like the sharp/flat display. I also made a holder for the 747 out of PVC pipe fittings , and velcro that works very well.

as pete said, i've used the tu-12 so long it's like family....but it won't last forever. what would be the cheapest thing to comfortably adapt to when it finally dies?
i've probably gone through 3 or 4 of 'em in a busy 40 year period of a zillion gigs. i'm glad there are new cheaper alternatives now. |

I used a 1/2" pvc cross "T" & a "T" that I cut for a snap fit on the leg, you have to file/grind the stop ridges out of the inside of the T, one end of the pipe is glued in, the other end is roughed up for a snug fit so it can be rotated for a better view, velcro, and there you have it. There is a "snap T" that is available, I only needed one so I improvised.I plan on doing basically the same for the SAT 800, except I'm thinking on a sheet metal base screwed to the cross T with the tuner secured with two heavy rubber bands, also sprayed with gray hammertone to get rid of the bright white. My TU-12 I bought used in 1986 finally gave up the ghost just last week. First, one of the red LED arrows quit, and shortly thereafter the needle did. Bums me out big time. Bought a new TU-15 in 2009, and it's not nearly as accurate as the old TU-12 was. |

Hey Scott, Here is my latest effort, I used 1/8" lexan for the base, also will use much heavier rubber bands, also need to use countersunk screws for better clearance. And, yes you can bend lexan like sheet metal, don't try with plexiglass without heating first.

If you're a cheapskate like me, then you may be interested in this free tuner app, Pitchlab. I use it on an Android phone, not sure if it's available on other platforms.
Having recently bought a Carter S12 I really needed to get a decent tuner, preferably with programmable custom temperaments, out of curiosity I tried this App. and it's doing the business for me so far.
It has a choice of tuner front ends, I use the strobe option. It also has a lot of preprogrammed instruments and you can program custom instruments.
I set up 2 custom temperaments, one for E9 and the other for B6 from the temperaments posted in this thread by Sid Hudson, I adjusted the notes in the C6 down a semitone to B6.
http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=241523&highlight=
I used the E9 temperament for all strings and E9 pedals & levers and the B6 temperament for the B6 pedals, it comes pretty close, to my ears in any case, just tuned a few pitch adjustments by ear, (i.e. Open F#). Still a work in progress, I hope to fine adjust the temperaments to suit my guitar.
I've only been playing for a few years, and had no experience of C6/B6, so difficult to judge from experience how well these temperaments sound, but they sound sweet to my ears
In any case worth checking out the tuner app, which works really well IMHO.
