Richard, there is nothing attached to your post to even check out if it's Lloyd Maines. Maybe because you are in Ireland we are unable to see it on our screens here in the U.S.?

Question

'rip it up' does have some cool stuff. it is lloyd (natalie's daddy) maines. i've never picked it apart note for note, but it's fun to listen to.
i've played my lazy man's version of it a few times with bands.

Maybe I was confused by the song title in Richard's post. Are we actually discussing the song "Let 'Er Rip" from their Wide Open Spaces album? I was looking for it on one of my endless CD racks to see if the musicians were credited below the individual songs and naturally the CD is nowhere to be found right now.

If this is the same song, and I've provided a link to the studio version of "Let 'Er Rip" below, there is a Wikipedia entry for the album, and there are two steel players credited on the overall recording, but not broken down by track: Lloyd Maines and Tony Paoletta. Chris wrote that it's Lloyd and I'm not doubting him, but Tony Paoletta does play steel on the album.

If it isn't even the same song then ignore this post. Shocked

yeah, sorry. it is 'let 'er rip'. and i was always led to believe it was lloyd, but i don't really know anything about anything. it's a cool solo. i had to cover it somehow with one chick singer band i was in...even started the song with the dobro.

Yes the song is "Let'Er Rip" and it was Lloyd Maines on that track.
Here's some old discussion and a couple of attempts at the tab.(I attempted some of it from some airport over seas; sitting and waiting for my delayed plane>>ha).

Thanks for reminding me of this song.

Such a great steel ride by Lloyd, very much like his stuff on all the early Joe Ely records back in Lubbock.

Lloyd is the best!

Ok the bit I was stuck on which is the 2nd time he goes up to the 4 chord is just bouncing off A+B pedals on strings 5+6 10th fret . I don't know why I couldn't get that yesterday ? I don't think you can play all that at that speed accurately , I think the track was slowed down to enable this ?

Most of us can't... But I'm pretty sure that Lloyd can, and does.

i can't imagine any studio going to the trouble of recording trickery for a steel player. ...unless the steel player is the producer and he had wads of cash in his pocket that day.

the only time i've seen wads of cash is on 'cops' when the black guy with no job , license or registration for his escalade has his pockets emptied as they look for crack.....and voila!... there it is!

that's not mine, officer. ya feel me?

Lloyd can do it, I'v heard him do it live many times! He sure don't need to slow anything down!

This is my failed attempt to play his solo. Obviously, I didn't try to work it out exactly for this show… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GId6zDgHwcs

Wally, I'd say you were well into the ballpark on that one! Cool

Below is a link to the Chicks doing this song on the Rosie O'Donnell show and according the description this was 1999.

That's obviously not Lloyd on pedal steel, can anyone identify the gentleman?

You have to slow down the whole band except the steel part to make it work right.

Thanks for the i.d. Pete, and sorry I didn't i.d. you myself Tim - in the photos I've seen of you in more recent years you're usually sporting a ball cap. I guess the no-hat look threw me off.

Pete, I really enjoyed your contributions to the show when my wife and I attended a Chicks concert several years ago, that was the Oakland stop after Taking the Long Way was released.

Of course I wasn't watching you very much, my wife has been well aware of my obsession with Emily Robison for many years. Me being more of a dobro player than anything else, when I've seen her strap on her Scheerhorn, my legs pretty much turn to jelly... Winking

Not to change the subject too much, but can we name all of the road steelers in the Chicks history? We have two of them in this thread, Tim and Pete, along with Lloyd Maines.

Anybody else?

Robbie Turner was the most recent one I think. We're (Dierks Bentley) are going to Ireland and London with them in March. Not sure if they'll be carrying a steel player or not, but I imagine they would be.

Mark, you're right about one thing....It's definitely a good job from a seated position!

p.s.
Sorry about being a smart@$$. I was just having a little fun.
