Playing Steel guitar and/or building Steel guitars is a labor of love.
Most of us are happy with the status Quo.
In my mind the worst thing that could happen is for the PSG to become popular with the youth.
Baggy pants poor diction and tattoos would mess up a good thing
We would have china making Steel Guitars and that would be the end of that labor of love and we would be saturated with young players to the point that if you had a few grey hairs, a little over weight, not too pretty or not pumped up and have a few tattoos you would have difficulty getting a job in a touring band or even at a local gig.
Most of you out there if this were the case would be playing only at a senior jam somewhere with 12 out of tune guitars and the only thing uglier than the singing is the singer.
Why would you want to mess up a good thing when we are in music heaven?!!! |

One thing is for sure , This instrument is not for everyone but I feel that it is a gift from above to have it in my life, Were we chosen to learn to love something maybe and search for answers like silver and gold about it, Lets just call it a gift from above and anyone who takes this gift and enjoys it enough to play it to others in return and also share your knowledge if asked, Might be doing there part, so why wouldnt I want to share in its delight and force it on the youth ? Not all will take this gift, so in answer there`s nothing to get messed up. It may not be in our hands ! just my thoughts

This thread could be dangerous:
If you have only one "youth with baggy pants, poor diction, and tattoos, to mess up a good thing" it would multiply into 40 million in about six months.

If the PSG caught on with the young it would follow the same path as the lead guitar.
The usual standard thing is you hire a young rock guitar player and try to get him to clean it up a bit.
The kids say I can clean it up a little but I'm not playing no dammm Fender.
If the PSG caught on with the young folks the standard would be hire some young rock steel guitar player and try to get him to clean it up a bit. |

I can see your "points" in a way. But not all young guys are like that...I wasnt...I played lead guitar for a country band in clubs when I was 16 because I loved country music.
Just remember if no one younger takes up this instrument we all love so much it will die completely. The music being produced today is doing enough to kill it IMO. So if a young guy comes along that wants to truely learn to play steel I would say go for it.
As far as looking "UGLY" I got that down pat. As a matter of fact when was the last time you saw some one ugly make it in the music industry? Its a beauty contest now and seems to have less and less to do with how talented you realy are or how hard you worked at it. Not to mention how much money you got backing ya.

| I play a local venue that books a lot of national alternative music acts (including Dale Watson and Wayne Hancock). To a large percentage of the regulars I am the steel guitar player in Cincinnati!!! I'm always telling them about the players like Chuck Rich and Kenny Holycross, the people I admire.I hope that I'm doing my part to turn them on to the people that I admire and telling them that if they want to hear the instrument played right, to get out and hear those guys play!!! |
