| Just saw RR for 1st time in a little club in NY, Dec.30th sold out with all types of people attending. Les Paul Trio and Letterman's drummer backing up, playing a red Mullens G2. He played "Foxy Lady" better than Hendricks, and was entertaining and gracious to the fans at then end of the show, shaking hands and taking pictures. He can play any type of music and will go on to be recognize as one of the best guitar players of all time. |

He is a great player that also really knows how to put on a show. You were lucky to see him in a club setting. I have mostly run into him at pretty big concerts and festivals over the last batch of years.

When I saw RR in Omaha, he grabbed folks from the audience and let them play guitar with the band. It was pretty cool of him.
At the end of the show I got to shake his hand and told him that I play the steel as well. He said, "What do you play? E9th? You shoulda got up and played man!"
I sure wish I would have done that, but likely it would have been a train wreck trying to play that beast of his.

Well, he's a fantastic musician, no doubt.
He may have played Foxy Lady better than Hendricks, but I have a hard time believing that he played it better than Hendrix.

| RR is a busy guy. The following evening he graced our stage on New Years Eve for the Nashville party featuring Hank JR. He blasted through solos on "Born to Boogie", "LaGrange" and who knows what else we played at the end of the night. He was playing his 6 string 4 pedal Jackson and man he sounded great. Fantastic musician and a great hang. |

Surely no one on the Steel Guitar Forum has actual firsthand knowledge of this, but apparently they are.
I didn't mean to hijack the thread, but when someone feeds you a line like that you gotta go for it. Somehow Alan and Monty as examples of the last name Hendricks doesn't get the same effect, and they are in my opinion not foxy. 
Back to Mike's post, I'm really liking some of Robert's stuff I've seen and heard on the six string standup Jackson pedal steel.

My band shared the stage at the Woodlands in NYC when Robert was first starting his solo career, and I've been impressed with his showmanship ever since. He's a real ambassador for the steel guitar, for sure.

Don't get me wrong I like RR but
In words similar to Dennis Green "if you want to crown him, then crown his....! But, he is who we thought he is"
In words similar to Bill Parcells "let's not put him in the Hall of Fame just yet"
Have you listened to those Sacred Steel players?
He may not even be the best in that Genre. |

Not sure about "greatest guitar player of all time" or "Hall of Fame" but, the show I saw, had a guy singing and fronting a Rock, Soul, Funk Band, playing and featuring the Steel Guitar front and center on every song. Incredible showman and musicianship. Young people were shoulder to shoulder, rocking, dancing and having a great time.
Don't see many people doing that. If you get a chance to see his show, do it! It's fun to see.

I'm with Mike P. I don't think his detractors quite realize the scope of his talents.
Also, there's a lot of discussion here about the future of the pedal steel, and why so few young folks play. A lot of that has to do with the music we've pigeon holed ourselves into, and the head down concentration we require to play (boring). Robert breaks all those molds and still plays at a virtuoso level.
I'm happy and amazed that there is such a guy, and think he should be inducted immediately into the HOF. What he does, nobody else can do and he does it at a very high level nightly. It's not country music, but neither was Santo & Johnny, who had the biggest steel guitar hit ever.

| Let's just say he has a personality disorder where he needs to belittle his underlings. It goes WAY further than that, but I've posted before with details and those posts have been removed. I don't lie and Bobby and Joey know. I guess your perspective on his 'genius' is in direct proportion to your own talent and ability. As a 30+ year professional musician (retired from American Federation of Musicians Local 257) I know talent when I see it. Jeff Beck and Eric Johnson are virtuosos. Randolph's a wanker musically and an ahole personally. |

I appreciate MH's discretion and ask others respect the Forum's position.
I have known of some popular country stars (one personally) who were complete jerks to those in their employ. These same folks cultivated a "good old boy" image to their fans. It Show-Biz. |
