On another post in this section, there's a photo of a Lap Steel that looks like a Fender Tele (with a square neck).
Are such lapsteels commercially available?
Or, perhaps better, what are good sources for components should I want a Winter Woodshed project?
Thanks ! |

Ron - Joel Eckhaus is a luthier located in Maine (http://www.earnestinstruments.com), and he has a lap steel he calls the Eckenbacher, which "combines some of the best features of both Fender and Rickenbacher steel guitars into one beautiful instrument", according to his website. It has a great look, though I've never played or heard one.

I would try Warmoth Guitars. They make really high quality bodies. I have built several guitars with their bodies and necks with excellent results.

I agree with Jeff. Warmoth bodies are great. I have three Warmoth guitars, and they're as good as they get. |

Lapdancer rednecks also work with Strats.

You can always just go to Craigslist and buy a made in Mexico Tele or Strat for about $300, swap necks and tuners and you're done. That's what I did. Worked great. _________________ Steve |

They probably work with a number of other guitars, too. I imagine you could bolt one onto an acousitc guitar which had a bolt-on neck.
My question is why one would want to go to such an expense when you can turn any solid-electric into a lap steel by just slipping in a nut riser, for about $4? The string separation might end up very slightly wider than the neck at the nut end, but so what? In fact, you don't even need a nut riser. Just cut a short length of threaded rod and slip it under the strings. Not only will the threads allow you to use whatever string separation you want, but you automatically have a movable nut with which you can shorten the scale length if you want to. |
