I've been building Commodium bedpan mandolins, octave mandos, mandolas, and a couple guitars for years. To my taste the bedpan body is too small for the bass strings of a guitar but is a great size for mandolins, mandolas and octave mandos. It occurred to me recently that it might also make a fine square neck for, say, C6 or E7 tunings, something that doesn't need the big bass but wants plenty of high end volume. They are loud, but still presentably warm. I'm just getting opinions before I launch a few. I'll probably make my first one 7 or 8 strings, 23" scale and tune it to my usual tuning, C13 (low Bb, hi G). The resonator cone is a National style. Here are a couple of videos of the mando/mandolas being played.

Sounds like an interesting experiment. I agree that the result might be lacking in bass response given the size of the commode you use.

The low C on the mandola Commodium had lots of umpff and that's what I'd have for a C6 tuning, so I think it might be worth a try. I have another mandolin to make for a customer then this will be the next project.
