I have a late 70's metal knob LTD 400 that exhibits a loud pop every time it's switched on. The amp plays and sounds okay, despite a crappy reverb and some relatively noisy pots. It has never been serviced and was in storage with a blown speaker (factory JBL) for decades.
Is this normal?
If not, is it something to be concerned about or should I just ignore it and keep on playing? |

Depends, what is loud? The LTD I owned had a turn on thump so if that is what you are hearing that would be normal.
I would bet the filter caps are going to need attention. Also cold solder joints and broken component leads where the parts feed through the PCB board where my biggest headaches. Otherwise it was a good amplifier.

A bit of "thump" on powerup is normal to Peavey's power amp design, they call it "Peavey Pop".
I have been told it poses no threat to the speaker.
It can be pretty loud.
The last time I had it worked on, the tech said not to worry. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

I'd take it to a good tech and have it checked out. These LTDs are old enough to need new electrolytic caps, especially in the power supply, and especially with it having been in storage for so long. I would have them replaced even if they tested good on a bench.
If the turn on pop is real loud it could mean those caps are way out of spec. _________________ Best regards,

Robert, Lane, and Mike -- thanks for your advice.
I would characterize the noise more as a slightly annoying "thump" than a loud "pop," and the amp sounds okay otherwise. Perhaps it has done this since it was new, I just can't remember because it was out of service for such a long time.
Several folks have advised me that replacement of the filter caps would be a good idea. I do plan to pull the chassis and send it down to Meridian for refurbishment in the near future. Just hoping to keep playing it in the interim.

Good choice to send it to Peavey. Just make sure you include a note specifying exactly what you want them to do.
Those Peavey techs are good, real good. And they care about the quality of their work. _________________ Best regards,
