I had a friend call this morning asking if I have ever heard of a Framus pedal sleel. Have any of you guys ever heard of such a brand and if so who makes it? He knows someone who is looking at the steel with 5 pedals and 2 levers. I did a search through the forum and did not find any info at all. |

After searching again I did find the guitar listed above. It is built overseas from what I can tell. I still would like some info if anyone know about this brand. |

German company, 1946-77, and 1995-present. Made guitars, basses, mandos, banjos, steels (mostly lap steels).

There are many pictures of Framus lap steels and console steels posted in the non-pedal section of this forum. Framus made a pedal steel too, but they are pretty rare.

Isn't there a photo of the German player, Frank Baum, playing a Framus PSG in Scotty's instruction book ('Anthology of...'? _________________ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles and Martins - and, at last, a Gibson Super 400!

It is a German made pedal steel, I used to own one way back when I was playing in Germany in the early 90's ... my honest advice, I would try to stay away from it if possible...

I believe ABM continued with building them in the late eighties, I had one. I think they no longer make them.

Thanks again for the replies. Damir Besic said he owned one back in the 90's and he would stay away from it. That is what I really needed to know, someone that had played or owned one. The gentleman looking at this guitar knows it has some sort of problem. It has 5 pedals and 2 levers and they want $650 for it which is a good price, that is if it works. |

I had one, I started on a Framus in 1980. It sounded good, but was very hard to play. Stringspacing to narrow, kind of fingertiptuning, heavy action.

I had a 8 string lap made by them before I got a PSG , it had little finger levers on each string that you could change tuning over easily. sounds very good. also had a 6 string tele shaped guitar as well.very well maded... |

Hmmm...from the pics shown it looks a lot like the Sho Bud fingertip changer. _________________ '83 Mullen custom D-10 8x5.

That's correct, Joshua, the Framus steels have a fingertip changer. The one on mine would get out of tune at the drop of a hat. The floor pedals were like rubber, and it only had 2 knee levers hard to operate. All the while, their pamphlet stated that they had succeeded in building the world's best pedal steel. At that time, I didn't know any better and ordered my S-10 Framus with the C6th tuning, which the Framus setup guys failed to deliver.
It's the same story with the Framus banjos: 40 years after Gibson had created the perfect bluegrass banjo, the Framus luthiers had the crazy idea to reinvent the banjo, with an equally pathetic result. |

I admit not knowing about a Framus steel, but when I was on the road our girl bass player had a Framus Bass. _________________ "FROM THEN TIL' NOW" |
