Ya know, for a very simple song, this little tune sure has legs. For over 30 years it was a regularly played standard with some surprising people covering it. I revisited it after watching some of the BK video linked below. These are just a few of the ways various musicians have interpreted it ...

Colonial Club Orchestra: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApUQzIFAMKI

Danny Kuuaana & group: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZYJUjnbZlQ

Billy Robinson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CddlHIw5b8I

Louis Armstrong: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_-jx-iP-5s

Earl Bostic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xcyGnfFWYY

Kealoha Life w/ Felix Mendelssohn: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f55OuQ_u-H4

Rubino (German Dance Band): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xo0hM1Oc54s

And probably my favorite … Gene Ammons: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiLSoccE_ew

And lastly, a member of the Jazz guitar forum just posted two rare Barney Kessel teaching videos. For #2, guess what song he uses as his first example?

I liked Barney's video too, but Charles King used to have conniptions when he heard his song played in swing time.

Even conniptions don't mean a thing if they ain't got that swing!

I feel that way when I hear opera singers sing pop songs.

"Song of the Islands" is heard in the movie It's a Wonderful Life. When George and Mary are in the old run down house on their wedding night. That's the record playing on the record player.

Check it out ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frXklECPkD0&t=61m9s

I'll bet Charles King made a few dollars on that... or maybe not. Neutral

PS a shameless plug... I have tab and audio for this song in my C6 lap steel song book #1.
