The PBS channel on Apple TV has posted a tribute to Ray Price, an archived show from 1981, under the Austin City Limits badge, then under Extras. Ray In his prime and Buddy is front and center. Available until the end of the month. Don't know if it's somewhere else, maybe online at PBS.org

Anybody know who the other band members were at the time? Of course, I recognize Blondie Calderon on piano but who's on guitar, bass, fiddles, drums?
Never mind, the credits are at the end of the video. Man! That was a YOUNG Kenny Sears on fiddle!

Maybe my eye's are playing tricks. But it looks like he's using 3 finger picks for the C6th maybe E9 also.
Never known him to use 3 finger picks for speed licks. Add to that his tendency to use his 3rd finger to block notes played with the 2nd finger.
Makes me think I'm tired and seeing things. Even though I know he could play with 4 finger picks if he chose to.

It's a flash file, similar to YouTube videos, there are programs out there to enable flash downloads |

I watched it in 1981 and it blew me away.......I watched it again and got the same feeling 32 years later......
The Big E was playing his LeGrande thru a Session 500 and had a great tone.......

Thanks Rodger...Classic Country for sure from none other than "Mr. Classic Country" himself, the late, great Mr. Ray Price! Buddy's sounding fantastic as usual and what really gets me is how he's having too much fun on that old Emmons!  It's a pleasure to watch his mastery of both necks. Thanks again, Carl |

hey carl...that 'old' emmons would have been pretty new in '81. (legrande)
i think he's only using two picks, but because of the way they're bent you keep getting a reflection off of one. |

I remember watching this episode of ACL back then with friends because PBS had been playing trailers of upcoming ACL shows and we knew Buddy would be with Ray and a great band and appreciative audience.
ACL had very good audio/video production at the time and the show was great to say the least. About 2 years ago I communicated with the Austin City Limits production folks and was told most of the shows were archived and some were available for purchase but they had no plans to release this show.
I'm sure it was a decision made on being financially viable and am happy ACL is still going strong.
However, it would be nice if there is a way to save this streaming video for steel guitar posterity and new/young players coming up to see.

Enoying watching this vid!
I thought Buddy was using a Li'l Izzy, but starting at 8min-20sec of The Other Woman I see it is some other Blue unit... Any idea what that is? |

I thought it distracting, that the " soloists " seemed to be walking all over the vocal.
On a more positive note ( pun intended ). I loved hearing the jazzy chords that Buddy did on " The Good Live ", on the C6 neck.

While I've always been fortunate to have Buddy and several other top players endorse my products, the close-up shots don't look like a Li'l Izzy or Izzy Plus to me. However, the color was right, so it may have been a Li'l Wonder
(In fact, I believe Jack Stanton has the only Li'l Wonder in captivity.)

I remember seeing it on the original broadcast......
It was a sheer joy to have this opportunity to view the program once again. The video cameramen did an excellent job in capturing the performance with lots of close-ups of EVERYONE, especially Buddy Emmons, his blue thumb pick and his bar technique. WOW!

When Buddy played at Jeffran College the week I was there around 1979, he had a MXR 6 band graphic eq plugged in the output jack of his steel. It was the small one that used a 9v battery. I remember it well because he took some time after his set to answer some questions and let us look at his gear up close.

The really important point would be how the sliders were set on that EQ! This ACL clip will probably start a run on vintage MXR EQs on eBay.
All kidding aside Walter, thanks for the interesting anecdote. Was Buddy playing an early prototype LeGrande, or a push-pull when you attended Jeffran College? |
