There are some options with the low strings - my favorite was to skip the D string on 9 (use RKR to pull B up to D!) and add G#, E, and B below that (bascially the same as most people do with Uni I think.)

Extended E9 adds a low G# and E as the 11th and 12th strings. The second pedal raises the low G# to A along with strings 3 and 6.

I played Ext E9 for 2 decades and highly recommend it for anyone who needs more low notes but doesn't want more pedals. One change I added was to lower the low E to C# on the F lever. I also lowered low E to D on the third pedal. Both of these changes were very good for adding "tic tac" bass notes and for filling in the low register on chords.

The bottom 2 strings on an extended E9 are G# in string 11, and E in string 12. The 11th string is raised to the note A on the B pedal, the same way as the other 2 G# strings, (3 and 6.)

The low E string is sometimes raised and lowered to F and E b along with the other 2 E strings. Like b0b, I lower the string to C# on the same knee lever that raises the other 2 E strings to F. This gives a nice fat bass chord with the F lever and A pedal position.

The E9/B6 universal tuning omits the D string, and the note must be obtained by either dropping the 8th string or raising the 9th (which is tuned to B,) on a knee lever. It has 3 extra strings. The G# and E which are now strings 10 and 11, and a low B string on string 12.

The choice of whether to use the extended E9 or the E9/B6 is purely a matter of personal preference. Some players feel they cannot live without a separate D string. Others, including me, feel that the inconvenience of having to grab the note on a knee lever, is compensated for by the extended range of the guitar and the accessibility of the B6 tuning.

That Larry Allen one is pretty intriguing. I like the 6 pedal doing the C6th P7 move. The boo-wah thing is also there w/ the low E drop to C#. I also like that it's still 10 strings. I don't think I could get used to the 2 extra strings - 10 is already a lot to keep track of. Problem w/ all the pedals is that the combinations are limited - can't raise 1&2 with A&B pressed at the same time. I guess you could use both feet like some guys do. It's sure tempting to mess with this!

Jim HOKE this tuning is great...the only problem I had on the Sho-Buds was lowering the 4&8 a whole step. Coop changers solved that. My Excels will lower farther to the 6th,. 3 1/2 steps. the 6th pedal with the RKL 1/2 step (Eb) is a C6 sound, lower RKL to a whole step (D) with it for the 4 chord ....etc.....I play a lot of Rock, Blues, Show tunes and country and this tuning is real full sounding.....Larry
