I'm just seeking some opinions or advice from you steel guitar builders out there concerning whether or not the use of a Seymour Duncan Phat Cat pickup is a good or bad idea. I'm considering putting a Phat Cat in one of the lap steels that I'm going to be making, but I can't recall ever seeing one used in a lap steel before. Has anybody out there ever tried one? If so, do I need to give special consideration to the pots I would use with it; that is, 250 vs. 500? If not, what is/are the problem(s) with a Phat Cat in a steel?

Thank you.

It never fails. Within minutes of posting this question, I was looking at the steels without pedals section of the forum and found a picture of an Asher lap steel with 2 Phat Cats in it. Sheesh!! They obviously work in a lap steel. I'd still welcome comments, however.

I have not used the PhatCat, but I did successfully use an Artec Firebird style pickup in a junky lap steel, which sounded really good after the pickup install. It was a pretty hot pickup, don't remember the exact resistance, but it was up there, somewhere around 13 ohms or so.
Very Happy
Wired it with a 250 pot, then after the pot failed (it was old spare) I wired it direct to the output jack since I was using a volume/tone pedal anyway. Sounded even better. I bet the Phat Cat would sound great.
