I have a Sho Bud rack and barrel 6139.
The question is will it affect the value to refinish the body?
I have the decals and the woodwork is pretty solid, though the blond finish is banged up and chipped.
A prior owner lacquered it over with a brush just to cover bared wood (no digs) that was getting soiled on it, not bad from 5 feet away.
The unit has original hardware with some changed rods and added knees. |

I suspect a good refinish would IMPROVE the value, but by less than the cost of the work.
A rack and barrel 6139 isn't like a Tip or Perm, not really a collector axe.
If i had the money to throw at it, I'd do it just to make it purty. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

I would only refinish if you plan on keeping it.
Resale ... not as advisable but then it's not in collector condition at this point any way. Right? _________________ MSA 12 String E9th/B6th Universal.

If you are going to gig with it, I wouldn't refin. I'd put the money into a good mechanical overhaul. Changer boil-out, etc. I'd send it to Ricky Davis and have him do his magic to it. Just my 2 cents. _________________ To write with a broken pencil is pointless. |

There isn't really a collector market for this era Sho~Bud yet, so that isn't really a factor. So make it a nice looking player, or leave it alone, whichever makes you happy. |

I wouldn't mess with the rack and barrel system. I had a famous Nashville ShoBud expert redo my 6139. They put all their hardware on it and in the process ruined the ShoBud sound. Not to mention putting two large scratches across the fret board. This was only supposed to take six weeks, It took over a year. These old girls sound good, don't mess with them If you want a great cabinet rework contact Albert Johnson in Tallahassee ( Sp )Fl. |
