Sonny Garrish is so deserving of this award. He does like to stay out of the spotlight. I hope he can make it to St. Louis to receive the honor. |

He even played on Haggard 1994. bang up job on Ramblin' Fever, just to name one.
That album is one of 3 Merle did for Curb; not his favorites, but I've enjoyed them. _________________ HagFan

The first time I heard Sonny Garish was when I first started playing, and I just had to learn the song "Momma He's Crazy" by the Judds. Starting hearing more and more of Sonny's playing on a lot of Gospel songs. I'm a big fan. I sure would like to hear from him on the Forum. I hope he is doing well.
Congratulations |

When Sonny Garrish played on the Hinson's albums, he defined Country Gospel Music. |

In the last two sentences of Sonny Garrish's "Country Soul Stew" (Steel Guitar Record Club #7 - available from the Steel Guitar Forum store) Sonny is quoted: " Music is my life and I like it that way. I'm sure I'll be at it a long time."
That was 1975 - almost 40 years ago and Sonny still maintains a full recording schedule.

Sonny is pretty low key. I doubt you will find any videos of him. But you will probably find hundreds of songs he played on, on YouTube. Just go to Allmusic.com and type in Sonny Garrish. You're going to get a list of songs he played on that will make your head spin. Then just look them up on YouTube.
Has Sonny ever played at the convention or any other steel guitar shows? _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Sonny played on quite a few of the records I grew up listening to as a kid, like the Judds' records, Kenny Chesney's records that came out when I was a teenager-like "She's Got It All"-his steel solo on that song was awesome! Then in 1996, when I got my first cd player, I heard Sonny playing some great steel on Shania's first record "Shania Twain", which came out in '93, then in 1999, before I started playing steel, I heard Sonny on Chalee Tennison's song "Just Because She Lives There" and was really amazed by the steel work, and Chalee's vocals. Sonny is also one of my many steel heroes! |

when i toured with sister-duo jj white it was sonny's album licks that i was supposed to cop. dobro and steel. luckily, sonny plays tastefully and melodically, not monster showoff stuff. though he could. |

Here are few things I found out. Thanks to Richard. http://www.allmusic.com/artist/sonny-garrish-mn0000084222/credits
Growing up in a musical family, steel guitarist Sonny Garrish was surrounded by musical ambition at an early age. His father, who wanted to be a professional musician, began using Sonny in his various bands when he was as young as seven. By 15, Sonny was no longer singing with his father, but backing him on steel guitar. And, while still a senior in high school, Sonny started playing with a group of musicians from nearby Washington, D.C. A standing gig in Fairfax, Virginia at Hunter's Lodge, which often hired Nashville talent such as Johnny Paycheck for weekend gigs, led Garrish to his first job in Nashville. After giving his number to members of Bill Anderson's band, the bandleader called Garrish and offered him a job. That opportunity led to session work and, for the next several years, Garrish slowly built a name for himself around Nashville.
Not an overnight success by any stretch of the imagination, Garrish often put his name on substitute lists, filling in for the first-choice musicians who were sick, or playing on writer's demos in hopes that his playing might stand out and catch the attention of a producer. Slowly he began getting breaks such as the 1976 Eddie Rabbitt session he played on that subsequently became a hit. And, by the '80s, Garrish had become a top-notch steel guitarist playing on records by Glen Campbell, Billy Ray Cyrus, and B.B. King, among others. |
