Topic: Stroboflip power supply problem |

My Stroboflip quit on me yesterday. I isolated the problem to the black 'knot' on the cord just outside the transformer. I'm getting voltage to that 'knot', but not through it. I'm wondering what is the significance to that thing. Both conductors are open with no continuity. Does anyone know if it would hurt to bypass that 'whatever it is'? I'm guessing it could be a magnet, or possibly a wire coil...?? Whatever it is, it's stopping electric current from passing through. I can't see anyway to open it up without destroying it.

its a ferrite bead - the intention is to filter out noise
since its a stoboflip and its sole purpose is to make noise and cause grounding issues, I think you can bypass the bead and be ok
I am a little bitter about the stroboflip right now -
I tried to use mine on a recording session yesterday - no matter what I did or where I had it in the signal path it added hum. I am really tired of that thing. From now on I am only going to use it to set up my steels here at my shop - the $99 polytune pedal is my choice for live and session work now.

Thank you Tim. I suspicioned that was what it was for.
I will by pass it and get it working again. I found out right away when I purchased the Stroboflip, I had to incorporate a ground lift adapter because of the hum. Other than that, this is the first trouble I've had with it.
I'll have to check into the unit you mentioned. I haven't heard of that one before.

its strange to me that they need that ground pin on the power adapter - that causes most of the noise. The tuner itself does not pass the signal through directly though - thats part of the problem.
However, using the tuner output on my Telonics pedal - with the Stroboflip powered by its adapter with the ground pin lifted still caused headaches for me yesterday.
I have also had good results using a $20 snark. Especially on my Bud with the wood neck - the clip on tuner does a great job!

Snarks are good. I have used one for a bass fiddle. Didn't take me long to break it, though.
The best clip-on I've used is Peterson's strobe type. It picks us the low notes better than any I've tried. It's especially good for the low "B" on my five string electric bass.
I never understood the ground wire on the Strobeflip's wall wart either.

I can't leave my Stroboflip hooked up (to the 2nd output on a Hilton or a Goodrich electronic pedal - LDR2. I didn't get so much as a distorted sound. Supposedly my unit was made after Petersen "fixed" that problem. I don't need to tune while I am playing, so I just use it to tune, and unplug it from my guitar.
