I'm posting this thread from a locked and sealed workshop. I have vowed not to leave until I have completed my 6-shooter PSG home-build.( I might just nip out for the Christmas Day 'Downton Abbey' special on TV ).
I'll be tuning G# E B G# E B and fitting two pedals.
Pedal 1 raising the B's to C# and pedal 2 raising the G#'s to A. This is as per the Fessenden 6-shooter set-up.
If I was to consider fitting a third pedal whilst I'm under the cabinet, what should it do?
I'm utilising raises only at the moment, knee levers down the line if all goes well.
OK, back to work, all suggestions welcome.
Regards as always from County Cork |

2 suggestions...
Pedal 3: raise B's & E's to C# & F#
P2 + P3 = F#m chord)
or
Pedal 0: raise E's to F
(P0 + P1 = C# chord)
(P0 = C#7 chord) _________________ "To live outside the law you must be honest." (Bob Dylan) |

If your changer is the same design as the original 6 shooter, I don't think it is sophisticated enough to allow two different pedals to both raise the same string.
That leaves you with the only option of raising the Es (to F or F#).
BTW I have mine set up as a primitive E9 (with just 2 pedals). E B G# F# D B
One pedal raises high B->C# and the D->E. G#->A and the low B->C#.
The big advantage to me is that as well as being able to play the most basic E9 licks, with both pedals down I get the A6 tuning I use on my 6 string lap steel (the tuning with which I am probably most familiar). |

will the six shooter changer lower a string??.. I am not familiar with the design.. If so, there are many good possibilites... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

If the changer will only do raises and you are not going to install any knee levers, consider moving your A & B pedals to the B & C position, then raising both E strings to F with the A pedal. That would give you a 7th chord with the A pedal, and another major chord with A & B.
If the changer will also allow lowers, consider lowering the E strings with the C pedal. |

Apologies for the slight delay in replying, I just checked in and was surprised to see more responses! I had no idea there could be so many tuning options.
I'm not sure of the design of the original 6-shooter changer, mine is basically six 'exclamation mark' shape fingers, each with two holes, one just above the other (at the opposite end of the shaft hole) The first hole on each of four of the fingers will facilitate the required two pairs of raises. The second hole will hopefully open up some options for using a third pedal, if I have to raise another pair which includes a string already 'spoken for'. I'll be using bike-type brake cables, and each finger will have adjustable raise stops. If I have to settle for two pedals, that's ok, but I'm trying to build-in the option of three. I hope this all makes sense, it does to me, but then again I'm primarily a banjo-picker....and it's time for my tablets. |

BTW....bearing in mind the original tuning plan:
(I'll be tuning G# E B G# E B and fitting two pedals.
Pedal 1 raising the B's to C# and pedal 2 raising the G#'s to A).....if my 'changer and cable' design won't cope with two pedals raising the same string, which would be better...the two E's to F ? Or F# ? |
