Unlike many forum members I can't say I remember not knowing what a pedal steel was. I grew up in central Florida in the 50's and 60's where I was exposed to a lot of country music on both radio and TV, recognized the sound and knew what the instrument was. That said, I didn't really have that WOW moment until Rusty Young's playing on the Buffalo Springfield version of 'Kind Woman' and shortly thereafter Poco in general.
That leads me to try and remember where and when I first became aware of the pedal steel. I seem to recall when I was very young, it had to be 1954 or later because we didn't have a TV till then, there was a Sunday morning church service broadcast and the featured instrument wasn't organ but pedal steel. I don't know how I found out what it was as my parents weren't musically inclined, but I did. We only received about four stations at the time, two each from Tampa and Orlando.
Does anyone else share this recollection? I almost wonder if I imagined it, but the memory is quite vivid. |

Jamie,
Don't know if there is much of an age difference between us, but I was definitely aware of the steel guitar (and probably pedal steel) by 1959. I wanted to take steel lessons for a while before I actually started in July of 1960 with Eddie Alkire.
Also, if you grew up in Central FL, I definitely remember seeing a pedal steel for sale at a music store in either Plant City or Winter Haven when we vacationed there at Christmas in 1969. _________________ 1974 Marlen S-12 1968 Tele 1969 Martin D-35H |
