What do you think of J/J 6L6 tubes? What would you use in a pinch or as a good replacement. Or are there any as good or better? |

I put a pair in my Music Man RD100 when I serviced it, sounds better than the tired Peavey set I took out. |

they are ok.. I have had them in amps and they sound good.. Problem is, like all modern tubes, they just don't last very long.... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

JJs are good robust power tubes IMO. I use them frequently and have never had a failure. A good bang for your buck tube.
I also like "Winged C" power tubes. The 6L6 is excellent when you want a warm, clean tube with good clean headroom. _________________ On man....let the smoke out of another one. |

I spoke with someone at the local store who seemed to be very knowledgeable on the subject.
He said just about all tubes these days (including JJs) all came from the same factory in either Russia or China. They may get tested at some point for matching, or microphonics and noise level, but generally all come from the same 1 or 2 plants.
I'd love for the amp guys to chime in on this subject.
Cheers,

I like the JJs and have used quite a few as replacements.
Clean headroom is what I like and after 2-3 years of hard use I can hear a difference and replace the power tubes and my hearing is not that good.
I replace pre-tubes as needed which is not very often.. after a thump test or loss of volume.
Altho I can hear a difference in some Pre-tubes I am convinced after cranking it up and fiddling with the tone knobs a person will end up pretty much back at their sound.
Therefore I am not a fan of high $$ tubes.
People using the tubes for distortion seem like them but I can say most of the worn out tubes I throw away test fine on a meter but they have lost their sparkle.
Same with old speakers...If you take a pair of 20-30 year old stock speakers and put in a new JBL or other brand 15" in you will hear a significant improvement.
It has also been my finding that if you replace a pair of old stock Fender speakers with a pair of upgraded speakers you will hear a huge improvement. _________________ MSA 12 String E9th/B6th Universal.
