Topic: George L pickup on a Mullen? |

Has anybody tried George L on a Mullen... I play some noisy rooms and I am considering my old trusty pick up and doing an install . Just wondering about opinions on what one if I do it. I like a bright sound?

| The 705 sounds great on my G2. I've heard some really nice Royal Precisions that had George L 10-1. |

Larry, I had GL's Tommy Whites on my Mullen Pre RP, sounded real good.

| I have 10-1's on my Pre RP and think they are pretty good sounding. There is no buzz except for my pedal, and the eq I like. I'd look into the George L's for your guitar. |

| Jimmy Day had 10-1's on his Mullen and it sounded great. Before you go that way try Lawrence 705's first if you can. That is what I have in my RP and love them. |

Are the 705 quiet like a gl? It's my main thought because I am very happy with the rich Mullen tone of their pick up, which is why I am very sluggish this time on making a decision... The George's are wonderfully silent and clean sounding... I'm not looking for dark humbucker tone but I know the 705 has a great name, I'll have to try one if I knew they were noiseless!

The 705 comes with 4 wires: if you prefer the single coil sound but need a bucker for noisy rooms, I'd get one of those and mount a switch to kill the second coil when not needed/desired.
If your resale value is a concern, mount it on the underside of the deck on a bracket: you won't hit it often anyway.

| I have mine wired in the humbucker mode and they are quiet and have plenty of high end. Not dark at all. |

My preference for the single coil isn't for bright v. dark, but for the attack or "bark and bite" of the single coil. Tonally there's not much difference between, f'rinstance, an E66 and a TrueTone. But envelope-wise, there's more soul in the TrueTone.

| I'm sort of surprised a lot of guys aren't going for the EONs. They are the exact same thing as an E66 except they use the iron blade magnets to slightly tame the shrill and brittle highs of the E66. The George L TW is a great pickup. If your putting them in a Mullen, I would go with something a little heavier than a E66. 705's are humbucker and a great pickup as well. |

I agree the ION seems to be tamed a bit on the highs. that's the one I'd buy if I do a Georgey!

Have you considered an Alumitone?
I've gone through lots of aftermarket pickups on my pre-RP Mullen and the stock single-coil pickup that Dixie Mullen built for the guitar sounds best. The Alumitone is a very, very close second place...and no hum.

I found I liked my George L's better with Corba Coil strings, brightened it up a bit.

| I know one thing for sure. My 10-1's are not dark, they are full and plenty sharp enough through my Webb and ShoBud single channel. I really like them but I haven't tried a 705 cause I'm happy now. Maybe someday but for now I'm a George L guy. |
