Watching Emmylou and Rodney Crowell again and noticed Steve Fishell was using a capo on the pedal steel.
He was playing many open note riffs and made good use of it.
I was just wondering if there are many instances of this? _________________ MSA 12 String E9th/B6th Universal.

I saw that on Austin City Limits this past weekend and wasn't sure what I was seeing. How does a capo work on a PSG? Just like a 6-string? Does it just sit there? Upset my world... _________________ Show Pro SD10 guitars

The capos I've seen on PSG are usually just round bars under the strings, just barely larger than the string height. That way the changer action doesn't get bound up in the capo clamp. If string height is 9/16", just get 3 1/2" or so of 5/8" round stock.
I used to have one. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Lane, the thing Fishell has on his guitar was on top of the strings. I wasn't sure if it was a capo or something to affect string tone. _________________ Show Pro SD10 guitars

Someone used to make a steel guitar capo at one time. I had one, and it was just round polished stock (I imagine it was stainless) with a flat machined on it so it didn't want to roll under the strings and stay in place. I don't believe I ever used it live. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I also don't see how the strings would return to their normal pitch with this type of capo, plus it wouldn't be wide enough to cover 10 strings. Maybe Fish didn't use pedals on that song. Maybe the strings do return to pitch just fine. Maybe Fish will see this and set us straight. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . I have a Beard capo bought for my 8 string Dobro.
I'll use it on the C6 neck, but it's not very pedal-friendly, the E9 neck and it don't get along terribly well. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Sho Bud sold pedal steel capo's in the 60's. I remember purchasing one via email from their catalog.

Of all the stringed instruments that need a capo, PSG is at the bottom.
Noneltheless, if you are playing some instrumental that's quite stacatto melodically and uses open strings in combo with fretted strings, and the bluegrass musician beside wants to raise the key to G, then it has a use.
I think that's about it. |

I have a capo of the type Sho Bud sold. Actually Gene Wooten had Snuffy Smith make them. They were just longer versions of his dobro capo. Snuffy passed away a few years ago, but he told me he just couldn't come out financially on them, they were quite time comsuming to make. Basically if you have, or know someone with machining skills, just find a good dobro capo and copy the design, making it long enough to cover 10 strings. _________________ LeGrande II, Nash. 112, Fender Twin Tone Master, Session 400, Harlow Dobro, R.Q.Jones Dobro |

Jeff Newman did a instruction course using a capo. Don't remember the song.
