It's pretty dismal these days, but good steel can be found if you know what dark corners to check out.
For Nov. we have a special and rare opportunity for steel guitar in our local "acoustics are better than Carnegie Hall" Public Radio's Atherton Studio and will feature The Bobby Ingano Trio.
Otherwise, you can use this as a basic guide www.hwnsge.5u.com
I'll be updating it today, hopefully. |

Hey Dan,
Congrats to you both! Look up my friend Alan Akaka. He is one of the finest Hawaiian steel guitarists today. Learned from Jerry Byrd and other great players in Hawaii, has a rich tradition with the music. Some of his earlier recordings included Jerry Byrd and Barney Issacs. Look him up, has regular gigs along with special events. Tell him I sent you:

Super nice guy, if you get a chance to hear, see and meet him, you'll be glad you did.

I spend about 3 months/year in Hawaii, mainly on Oahu. Here are my recommendations: Thursday night, Moana Terrace at the Waikiki Marriott, 6:30 to 9:30 - The Keawe Ohana, featuring Alan Akaka on steel (visiting steelers drop in and sit in); Friday Evening, Honey's at the Ko'oalu Country Club in Kaneohe, The Ko'olau Serenaders with Derrick Mau on Steel; Saturday and Sunday, Olomana Country Club in Kailua, Greg Sardinha and friends, Sunday afternoon, Aarom Mahi, George Kuo and Martin Pahinui, often with Bobby Ingano, Moana Terrace, Wednesday evening, Kanekapila's at the Waikiki Outrigger, Cyril Pahinui with Jeff Au Hoy on steel. - Jack _________________ Jack Aldrich

Actually, you'll be extremely lucky if you ever catch Bobby doing this gig nowadays, it's no longer on his radar. Sadly, he's got nothing else happening right now, but that may be changing!
The only steel besides the rare show with Bobby I find worth bothering with in Waikiki is Jeff's Wed., sad state of affairs currently, but at least Jeff's weekly is outstanding. |

In addition to Jack's mentions, is not Paul Kim still playing with Eddie Kamae's group at Honey's at Ko'olau from 3pm until...?

I've not heard to the contrary but unfortunately I never make it out there. |

Aloha Bill,
Paul still plays on Sundays at Honey's.
It's actually Mike Kaawa's group. Eddie was just featured by the group and sat in to do a number of songs, but has stopped going there. I've heard that Ocean Kaowili is not with this group anymore either.
Talked with Eddie last week at the Elks Club.
He said he doesn't play anymore. Just wants to relax and take it easy. He is doing fine. |

Thanks for the update, Derrick.
While it might be Mike Kaawa's group now, I have two CDs of that group that plays at Honey's on Sundays and they are both under the group name "Eddie Kamae and The Sons of Hawaii" - both on Eddie's "Hawaii Sons" label. So sometimes I put two and two together and come up with something slightly more than four.

P.S. Although two years overdue, mahalo for entertaining my wedding party at our pre-wedding/rehearsal dinner at Honey's on Friday, June 24, 2011. I love those evenings with Uncle Eddie, Uncle Albert, and you. I can't believe I haven't seen you since then... |

Aloha Bill,
It was the Mike Kaawa group long before Eddie even sat in with them from what I've heard. Eddie however did use them for his recordings and special one time concerts under his Sons Of Hawaii name.
We are down to three in our group too.
Uncle Eddie Akana suffered a heart attack two months ago.
He is doing good now and recovering.

If that was the Aloha Tower gig then I saw that one, Bobby Ingano played steel as he often had with Eddie/Mike at The Elks. Yet another good steel gig that is no more. |

Isn't the Hiram Olsen Trio with Casey Olsen on steel guitar playing certain nights at the Halekulani's House Without A Key, in support of Kanoe's Miller's lovely hula. A must see for honeymooners. |

Sounds like I need to get down there and check it out again.
The other nite I was listening to some archived Genoa from her Marriott days and noticed Alan was superb with his Kelii-esque back fills. |
