I have 710 p/ups in my p/p at present,
& i have just bought a Lashley II &
i'm thinking the 710 may be a little
sharp.Can anyone tell me about 910.
I heard Johnny Cox at the Opry last year
& his sound was great.I think he uses 910 ?
Any advice on the 910 would be great.

John Hughey,Hal Rugg are using 910's on their Zum's. I put them on my MSA and went back to 710's, I like the responce of the 710's. Put 910's on my Brothers MCI and they sound great. A lot of picker's are using 710's. Going to a Steel show today and will look and see how many have what on the guitars and post it for you later.

About a year ago I swapped out BL humbuckers on my newest D-10 ZumSteel just to find which I liked best. The guitar was shipped from Bruce w/ 910s. Here are my views...

BL 910- overall, a little darker tonal qualities than the 710 and a better balanced p/u. For me the 910 was a little too dark in the mids but not at all un-e-q-able. The p/u was acceptably quiet.

BL 710- hotter and crisper than the 910 and also marginally more quiet(meaning less hum.) Less balanced and more harsh, in particular on the high end (7-8K and up) but good sounding in the mids.

My Conclusion- I got Bruce Zumsteg to wind me a set of single coil p/ups (one for each neck) and have never looked back. I have always liked the 'growl' of a single-coil and thus far haven't had any recording or live-sound engineers grousing about the hum.

Obviously different p/ups will sound different on various guitars. The hand technique employed by the player will have alot to do with tone too. The 910 and 710 are very good products. Don't overlook single-coils though either. Jerry Wallace makes a great sounding single-coil p/u.

Just my humble views for what they're worth... hope this helps.

Paul, there have been other threads on this recently that you could look up. Basically the idea seems to be that the 710 was designed to give a lot of highs to compensate for loosing them with a pot pedal. But with the Hilton active pedal the 710 is too bright, and the 910 works better. The same might be true for brighter and darker guitars (for example Emmons p/p versus old MSAs). When I got a Hilton pedal the 712 on my Fessy S12U was too bright, so I ordered a 912. The 912 hasn't arrived yet, but I have found that by simply adjusting the tone control on the Hilton pedal I can get the 712 to sound pretty good. It remains to be seen if the 912 will be better.
