It's much more versatile if you use two different pedals to get that change.

Unless you're playing the chromatic strings, instead of lowering both strings, you can just raise the E's and drop back one fret.

I've never seen or heard of anyone lowering the 5th and 6th on the same lever just a half Tone....???? Are you sure it's a half tone on both??? I just don't see the use in this at all.....unless they were split between two different knees.

Gotta go along with Ricky on this one. I have never seen lowering 5 and 6 a half a tone. Could you be speaking of the Paul Franklin pedal, where he lowers 5 and 6 a whole tone; also lowers 10 a whole tone with it. And now Tommy White has split this for further embelishment of this haunting sound.

If you are talking about 5 and 6 down a half a tone, it of course creates part of a dim chord. The same thing can be achieved (as has been stated) by raising the E's and moving down one fret.

Could you tell us where you have seen or heard about this change?

Thanks,

carl

When I bought my first professional PSG in 1979, a used '70 Emmons S-10 with 6 pedals and 4 knees, the guitar came with that halftone lower for strings 5+6 on pedal 5. I have no idea who put the change on the guitar, much less why. I never found much use for it and soon split the change, leaving the G# to G on the pedal and putting the B to Bb (along with the same halftone lower for string 10) on an extra vertical knee. I used the B-Bb change a LOT more than the pedal with the G#-G.

That particular guitar also had an extra "unsplit" A/B pedal change on P4: raising 5 to C# and 6 to A. Going from P4 to no pedals to P5 and back created some pseudo-hawaiian sound - maybe that was the reasoning behind that setup.

No one has mentioned what tuning you were talking about, but it sounds like all have presumed E9th? Actually 1/2 tone lower on 5 & 6 is a standard on the C6th, P5 & 6.
