Hey guys, Emmons crossover licks. (I think thats what they are called) The ones that get higher and lower at the same time. Would anyone have a sample or two I could steel? As Always, Thanks in advance.

Wayne:

A Ray Price song, "An Eye for an Eye" has a great steel intro (Buddy, I presume)with the "crossover" type lick in it. The chord pattern of the intro is 4 1 5 1
The crossover part is the last 5 notes, going from the 5 to the 1 chord.

My version of those last 5 notes starts with the 2nd string lowered a full step and with the 5 string raised (A pedal). Those notes are unison.

(1)Pick strings 2 and 5 at the 6th fret as outlined above; (2)slide to the 7th fret, releasing the A pedal as you get there; (3)slide back to the 6th fret, releasing the knee lever as you get there; (4)slide up to the 8th fret; (5) now, strike strings 4 and 6 at the 8th fret.

Note: for the first 4 notes above, you only pick the strings for the first note - the other 3 notes are the result of the bar movement and the change in pedal and knee lever.

Hope this helps.

Hey John, Thanks for the X-over lick and the response to my post. You know, I now have a new found fondness for burgundy Emmons guitars.

Hey Wayne -

I'm not sure, but I think I hear this "crossover"-type lick in the song "Why Should We Try Anymore (Hank Williams Jr. and Lois Johnson, 1972) in the turnaround. This can be found on Rebel, Ricky and Jeff's audio tabs:
http://users.interlinks.net/rebel/steel/steel.html

I have not been able to figure out how to copy this lick and have just assumed I don't have the correct copedent or something, but maybe I'm just being obtuse. Has anyone else figured this out? - if so I'd be very interested......

Hey Scott,
Although the "emmons cross" licks seem to usually involve a unison which splits and goes different ways, I can see why this would remind you of one. It isn't a unison to start with, but they do go different directions. It seems to be in Db.
This would be my guess:

1------------|-------------|-------
2------------|-------------|-------
3—12~~~~9(b--|-9~8-9~~9(b--|-9--9--
4------------|-------------|-------
5—12(a~~9(a--|-9~8-9~~9(a--|-9--9--
6------------|-------------|-------
7------------|-------------|-------
8------------|-------------|-------
9------------|-------------|-------
10-----------|-------------|-------

1--------------------------|-
2--------------------------|-
3--6(b~~5------------------|-
4------------9~~~~~~~------|-
5--6~~~~5(a--9~9(a~~9--9(a-|-9
6----------------------9(b-|-9
7--------------------------|-
8--------------------------|-
9--------------------------|-
10-------------------------|-

What do you think ?

Scott, I listened to it but I'm not sure about it. I'll work on slowing it down. Thanks for the reply to my post.
