I just picked up one of these:
http://www.skbcases.com/sports/sku.php?cat=9&pid=6

I can put my D10 PP Emmons in it and it weighs just under 50 lbs. I put the legs, rods and pedal rack in a small rifle case. The leg case is soft and padded and has a shoulder strap. So it frees up a hand when I am hauling my stuff into a club.

I cut the foam that comes with the SKB case. Once I get settled in with it I will figure out how to configure the insides.

I found the soft rifle case in a hunting store and it cost about $9.00. There are tons of bags/cases and whatever made for sportsmen stuff that is well made and cheap out there.

I'm thinking that the SKB case should be fine for flying my S10 steel.

(just fixed the link to the same case I got. The one before was the wrong one...sorry)

Good thinking Bob...I bought a Plano case several months ago and used self cut Styrofoam for the inside. The center where I place the guitar I placed a sheet of 3/4 foam for the guitar to rest on and my wife and I covered all the styrofoam with cloth to dress it up a little. Fits tight. I now need to replace the egg crate foam in the top with thinner egg crate foam to make closure easier. The 1 big mistake I made was not paying attention to the length...52"...my friend Bill McCumber (steel player from Alice, Tx) suggested that I could carry my golf clubs along with my steel. My case is easy to use secure with a lock and 5 latches and wheels. I just needed to pay more attention to length than price...142.00 from Amazon...even with it being too long I like it...jr

Bob,
Would there be room for both the guitar and legs/pedal bar, etc. in the case?

I use a Gator GK-49 for my S10. Love having the wheels Smile
http://www.gatorcases.com/p/111196-883/gk-49

All I did was use some acoustic foam (egg crate) to separate a few areas. It holds my S10, the leg pouch, volume pedal, tuner & accessories, cables, etc... Only thing I can't fit in there is the bench.

Total weight is just under 50lbs and the overall size (LxWxH) is just over the 62" allowed by most airlines. But - most airlines also allow over-size at no charge for musical instruments, within reason.

Although I have not taken a flight with mine, I would not hesitate to do so.

This one is my fly case (other threads about it on here too)- it's disguised as a drum stand trap case :-}

http://www.skbcases.com/music/products/proddetail.php?f=&id=168&o=&offset=1&c=98&s=77

The big advantage of this case is that you can get the pedal bar and legs on top of the guitar due to the space in the lid !
Needs to be customized with foam of course, but with the addition of light-weight airline legs I can squeeze my Zum D10 9+9's at just a hair under 50lbs/23KGs for flying.

There is not enough room for anything except the D10 body. There might be enough room for everything if I use the case for my S10 though.

I've been using a 49 key foam lined keyboard
gig bag for years (about $25). '69 Emmons D-10
weighs in at 30 lbs. Tacked together a wooden case for
the pedals, legs & rods @ 12 lbs.

Very interesting thread. I have a Walker case for my MSA U12, and while the wheels are great, it is heavy to lift. I had thought the wood was necessary to support the guitar's body - for those of you using self-cut foam, how well does that support/protect the steel? I see the Gator case is ATA certified - do you think foam would be enough protection against aggressive baggage handlers?

Pelican also has a number of appropriate-sized epoxy cases

Didn't know about Pelican, Dave - lots of options. Might be useful for a number of things.

What I want to hear about is the interior foam and its ability to fully support and protect a pedal steel body.

Depends on the foam and just how bad the the impact on the case is. I have seen full on anvil ata cases with iron rods slammed through them come out of baggage claim and steels wrapped only in a towel (long dumb story) make it fine. So you never know.

A relatively ridged plastic like the better SKB or Pelican cases and a couple inches of firm foam with the steel packed snug is about as good as it gets. The only thing better is a real ATA wood /metal case...Heavy. Or molded carbon fiber... big money.

Right, I won't ask about the towel, Bob.
That gives me a bit better handle on this issue.
I do like my Walker case, but since my steel's been gaining weight, I have to look at how to compensate.
