I have a 73 MSA Classic. I was wondering if the mica front panel could be changed? It looks like a fairly easy change out. Any ideas if possible and where I could get a snazzy front plate? Thanks in advance

Take a look at some automotive vinyl wrap. Goes on similar to window tint, and is in most cases removable. One forum member has his done in a "carbon fiber" wrap. It goes over the mica.

http://autovinylsolutions.com/ for an example.

Scott,

That's a great Idea. I always wanted a white on white or red and white. THANKS...

although, if you ever decide to sell it everyone will be wishing it were black.

and it may be an item either covering or replacing vinyl with the white plastic trim...not sure.

I think the carbon wrap is fine. However, Bobbe Seymour commented several years ago that mica on a steel guitar is installed under pressure and not like a piece of furniture. It's sounds logical as ill fitting parts on a steel guitar will effect the string vibrations and tone. Better get more info if you decide to remica the guitar.

My 2 cents,

Lenny

John: That carbon fiber wrap is neat looking. I might do that myself to one of my Emmons's...
Did you actually have to remove the necks from the body to do this operation? that's one thing I know I wouldn't do. Thanks, Tommy.......

Yes; Necks and headstocks came off...you could then put the parts back on top of the wrap, and I don't think it would kill much of the sound, but I did not want to do that (just in case). So I made very precision cuts so that the necks and headstocks would mount back directly onto the mica with no wrap in between. (the headstocks were the hardest part) Full contact as per factory. A lot of work, but it worked out great. The guitar still sounds great like a Strayhorn Emmons should. You should research and know correct neck bolt torque values. I love this guitar. If you can live with the existing top deck mica, doing the front and rear aprons alone is really easy, if you are patient and capable of doing neat work. It's also reverse-able, and non destructive if you are careful..

PS Shop around and use the good stuff.

Or: Always buy black guitars...ha ha. JW
