I have an old Fender silver face super reverb with 4 10" Fender special design speakers. All still stock. I am wondering what I can do with an external cab. loaded with a Peavey 1501 that is 4 oms. I can see that the 4 10's are tied together and has a plug in on the back of the amp. Is it wise to just add the 15 to the extension spkr. jack, or unplug the 10's, and use the 15 by it's self ?

Shouldn't ya'all be out Trick or Treatin'....
The ans. is The Super Reverb I bought for my dad to play guitar in church with, back in the late 60s, that now, is part of my collection, simply does not have the juice to consider using a 15" spkr. With or without using the 4 - 10s. No matter what the Ohms. I have a 69'ish Twin with JBL's as well that is fine the way it is. So I guess I'll just leave the Super Reverb stock. I could just donate it to you B0B....... Trick or Treat !
Have a great Holliday Season !

Super Reverb output transformer (OT) is 4k primary with 2 ohms secondary you could change that OT with a Bassman OT such as from Triodestore Magnetic Components that has them in any ohm you want to match your 15" speaker.
Put in some 6550 tubes and rebias. Use 12AX7 phase inverter tube. |

I never did understand why there was an extension speaker jack on Super Reverbs. As it has been mentioned, the amp's stock 4-10's present a 2-ohm load to that dedicated transformer. Adding anything else is inviting trouble other than, maybe just perhaps, at very low volume. |

Thanks for your input Mark and Eric. As was the case with dad's old Les Paul Jr., best to just leave it alone.
B0B.. I was just teasing you. This Forum is the best ! Thank you for all your efforts !

Some guys will use extension cabs such as 4 ohm total load since the Super Reverb OT handles down to a 2 ohm load.
Fender amps like old BF bassmans have always been abused in the old days and most handled overloaded just fine. |

8ohm paralleled with 2ohms is still like 1.6 ohms... close enough to work. Most of the power is still going to the 10's, though... if a Fender can handle 2x mismatch you could parallel another 2 for a 1ohm load and 50% split in power... that would be dangerous, however, as I don't fully believe the '2x' rule holds for all Fenders... the further you get away from 8ohms the less this rule holds IMO. IOW, you're right... leave the Super stock! _________________ Too much junk to list... always getting more. |

The 4 speakers in the amp could be rewired in a parallel/series cofiguration to get a total of 8 ohms. Then, another 4 ohm load plugged into the extension speaker jack (the BW) would be paralleled, and give a total impedance of 2.66 ohms. This is well within the operating limits of the amp and output transformer, and would probably sound fine, but keep in mind that the wiring would have to be changed back if you were not using the external speaker!
The moral of this story is that there are ways to do just about anything, but sometimes it's more trouble than it's worth. |

Hope I didn't alter your intentions with this highly edited quote.
I will disagree with this statement (not with your decision---that is, of course, up to you). The size of the speaker is unrelated to its power handling or the power required to drive it. The impedance issue is important but with that satisfied, the BW would work just fine with the Super. Would probably sound great too. |

Thanks guys for your input. I was really trying to put to use this old amp. Unfortunately, the super really does not have enough output to make it worth while to invest in the 15" BW. In simple terms, it probably would not have the volume and clean headroom that would make it worthwhile. For that Fender sound, I have the Twin. But, I also like running in stereo, thus the two 112s. I should just have it cleaned up and brought back to new condition. It has a lot of white crap all over the guts.
You guys are awesome with your wisdom.
Thanks for your help.
