This may be a question for Brett Day.... Does any one know who played the Steel on the Studio Version of the Nervous Breakdown. It is killer. I have seen a couple of Live YouTube versions that are good but Brad just nails it.

This year in St Louis, Sarah Jory with Dino Strunk and then Sarah, Joe Wright and Dino again just nailed this a second time. Wow! I felt like going home and having a giant Bonfire! Fortunately, it was a 5 hour drive, I had time to recover, so no musical instruments were harmed.

Thanks

i don't know what song all these mentioned pickers played, but paul franklin wrote and played an instrumental on a jerry reed album 30 years ago that put any other attempt at speed picking to shame!
is this the same song?

It's the only 'Nervous Breakdown' I'm aware of and it was indeed Paul Franklin..

I'm sure it was Mike because Randle started playin' on Brad's 5th Gear record, which was released a few years after Brad's "Who Needs Pictures" came out. On the Who Needs Pictures" credits, Earl Clark plays steel on "Cloud Of Dust", while Mike Johnson plays steel on all other tracks

My Mistake as I should have posted a link to the tune. This is the live version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7y-Ipi1dnng

It is not the Jerry Reed / Paul Franklin tune that was referenced.

Brad just kills this version. Wow!

looks like jimmy to me, also.
why, though, would someone name a different song the same as a mind blowing exciting classic like paul's original?
these guys are all good pickers, but if you haven't heard the jerry reed album version you should.

i might ad that i am a brad paisley fan, this just seems strange to me unless brad's never heard the other tune, which i can't imagine.

Wow! I can still remember when the Reed/Franklin song song came out. I had heard it on the radio, so I went and bought a dozen copies of the 45 and gave one to each of my steel-player buddies! Hot pickin', and still fresh today. Jerry's playing showed so much variety while keeping his own originality front and center. I can listen along in that song and and dig his original stuff, as well as the famous licks of players like Phil Baugh, Danny Gatton, and Alvin Lee.

I would bet that Mike Johnson played on the recorded version. I have the CD, and while there are no individual credits, there is paragraph where he thanks the band, and it lists just first names, but one of them is Mike. I also had someone tell me that Mike played on the first album. Randall is not listed anywhere.

EDIT: I was wondering where Brett got his info and removed the CD from the case. Under it was the listing of players, and Brett was correct. Earle on one song and Mike on the rest.

Good grief Charlie Brown. I haven't thought of the nervous breakdown I would guess in over 50 years. Tracy

This stuff happens a lot of times, it seem as though maybe the English language only contains so many cliches and you have to start over. Google "Crying" or "Moonlight" or something! Laughing

BTW The nervous break down is really two old fiddle tunes put together. So many of the old fiddle tunes sounded alike. Tracy

Yes. As I stated B4 it had to be at least or 60 years ago when I first heard it.Tracy

Chris, I posted a link to it earlier in the thread.

FYI, copyrights cover works fixed in a tangible format, but because titles are typically short, they don’t fall under copyright protection. So no, you can’t copyright a title to a book, song or movie.

The original "Nervous Breakdown" that I believe everyone is making reference of came out on Jerry Reeds album named "Half and half" and on that album it was Paul Franklin who recorded it! There was a post somewhere in the Steel Guitar forum at one time where Paul was asked about it, and he said he cringed everytime he heard it, assuming that he meant he wasn't happy with what he had played on the recording. Also, everyone should go to: http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=289982&highlight=nervous+breakdown

Mike Johnson for sure on the studio cut. Jimmy in the picture. Seen Brad when he first came out at the state fair in Missouri and Jimmy was with him.

I don't know how many "Nervous Breakdown"s we are up to by now, but it's got to be a lot. Heck, the Stones were on the 19th way back in the 60's! Wink
