Even though I've listened to as many of the Merle Haggard & the Strangers records I could get my hands on, instrumental recordings of the Strangers did not make their way into my vinyl stacks. I found a decent copy of the Instrumental Sounds Of The Strangers last week and it's been on the turntable ever since. Examples such as "Terri" (written by Fuzzy Owen), where we get to hear Norm Hamlet take some awesome turns at Hawaiian-style phrasing against a relaxed back drop are such a pleasure.
The whole band sounds great of course, and one can imagine them having a standing engagement at about any nightclub they cared to in that era, but I guess they had a pretty good gig! Just good warm music, without all the noodling and lick frenzy that turn me off most instrumental tracks and shows these days.
