Hey dudes. I'm going to be in New York this coming week, and I'd love to sup upon some weissenborns, dobros, lapsteels and so forth. Are there any recommended places for doing so? Also, any good players of said fineries to check out? Thanks!

I've heard "Mandolin Brothers" on Staten Island is a good source for acoustic instruments.

| As Stephen mentioned in your other post, Matt Umanov on Bleeker St. in the West Village has some resoguits as well as some real nice Spanish guitars. A few lap steels too. Prices for the lap steels are pretty stupid and not worth even considering if you're in a buying mood. I've seen Mandolin Bros. advertise some very overpriced steels too. I'm not sure what the story is but it seems like NY stores either don't have a clue of the market prices of steels or else they know exactly what they are doing and are just holding out for an uninformed customer. (I'm talking about the $650 Maverick kind of thing). |

Mandolin Bros may be your best bet for being able to play a variety of resos & lap steels in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Prices are high.
I was in Matt Uminov a few days ago and theres not much there. A few beat up vintage lap steels behind bulletproof (seemingly) glass.
30th St. Vintage Guitars has a few lap steels floating around....bring your own strings!
There's a Pawn shop on 23rd st. around 7th & 8th ave that usually has a nice variety of lap steels.
You can see a Carter Starter at Sam Ash on 48th St. They may not know that they have one though...  oh yeah, they have a Gibson Dobro. Try not to wake up the staff, they might accidently sell something......

I'd have to agree - Mandolin Bros are not known for their knowledge of, and familiarity with, steels of any sort. Their strong suites are vintage flat-tops and arch-tops - no one is better-informed than these guys in that regard.
I don't believe they're attempting to 'gouge' with their steel pricing - no one in there plays steel (to my knowledge), so it's a grey area for them. There are rarely any decent steels there, at any rate; don't miss seeing the store, though! |

Though it's been years since I visited the city, I agree with everyone, NYC ain't a steel guitar mecca. If you want a 6-string with a whammy bar, THEN New York is the place. North of Nashville try Elderly Instruments.
