| Has anyone tried Paul Franklin's C6th Speed Picking course? Could it do anything for me that Joe Wright's Wright Hand course, 20 years of practice and a sudden (and somewhat unlikely) infusion of raw talent won't? |

Well, I have heard it, but haven't "taken it".
I did buy and do the E9 CDs.
What it did for me, or should I say "is doing" for me is give me at least 5 new licks that I have been forcing myself to use.
I have been over the last 20 years of playing in "combat situations". I have reduced my playing to the licks that are "playable" against lousy rythym sections, and horribly out of tune guitars. Sorry, but it's true.
WHat the E9 CDs did is to give me a framework for a "standard I,IV,V" song like "Truck Driving Man" and I have been steadily using pieces of it for instrumental breaks.
I notice that the "melody framework" is "lacking", but sometimes having to feel that I have to oncorporate "melody" is what ends up making me play octave melody lines agains the din, and I forget how to "improv". Combat Playing.. In the best case, I can now play "Pour me another cup of coffee" in melody, and the next four or eight bars of a PF lick off the CD with NEW stuff.
You'll notice that if it takes a week for each tape, that it'll take a month of weekend-week gigs to "get it out" on the bandstand. In order to do it, you need to learn it note for note, and memorise it. Actually "using" the licks is as challenging as learning them against a biab type track. Maybe moreso.
I'd vote for it being worth the time, and the money is actually incidental.
I'll be getting them next myself.

The Paul Franklin courses you speak of are not the same type of course as the Joe Wright or Jeff Newman technique material. Improving technique makes what you play sound better but does little for your note selection for solos. Paul's courses take you through 32 bars of a solo over a progression similar to 'Truck Drivin' Man' and gives you a bunch of parts, positions, and ideas for notes to choose in constructing a solo. All four speedpicking courses follow that format. Two are E9 and two are C6.
And he leaves the technique up to you. In my opinion, yes, it will do a lot of things for you that you probably never thought of. Paul is a master of playing totally straight-ahead or 'out' as far as he wants to go. Learning how he gets there (and BACK) is a valuable lesson in my book.

Larry is right about the Franklin C6 course being different than a Newman or Joe Wright course.
He basically takes you through some licks with complex phrasing that would be very difficult to transcribe by ear (at the speed he plays them). He then plays them slowly at first and provides rhythm tracks for you to practice them. There's no tablature involved, it's all audio.
I bought the first one and recently spent a week or two with it. I think it's tops. It showed me some ways of kicking off a solo and will give me jumping off points for making my own solos. Like Larry said, the progression is similar to Truck drivin' man, but the lines are jazzy enough that they could be modified for a Chalie Parker tune. I'm definitely buying the 2nd one at the convention this summer. |
