You will need a tuning that at least offers Major and minor chords to accompany most songs.
A good start is a 6th tuning (A6, C6 etc.)
since this gives you majors and minors and is sometimes strum-able.
I took the basic A6 tuning and added strings at the top and bottom to give me 7th chords, Diminished, and augmented as well as the major and minors.
I am now able to play nearly every song using full sounding correct chords as the songwriter intended.
On a lap steel without pedals.

Is this what you are talking about?

Tuning Hi to Low:
F# .014
D .020p
A# .024
G .028
E .016
C# .020p
A .026
F# .030
E .034
C# .040
B .046
G# .052
(The D, A# and G are lower in pitch than the E)
These "re-entrant" strings are very easy to get used to, and familiar to anyone who plays E9 pedal steel.
The string gauges are just a guide... I often use a string one size bigger or smaller depending on what I have on hand. Especially on the fatter wound strings, you can go much larger than suggested for a guitar. I like the strings tight so the bar won't bend them out of tune.
I know it seems weird to have fatter strings above the high "E" and you will have to file the grooves in the nut deeper to keep the string tops level.
But having a nice full augmented triad, or a full diminished chord, is really worth it to me!
