I got to shake his hand after a show in Monroe, Michigan a couple years ago as well as sitting in the front row on his side. Tremendously gifted player and a real nice guy to boot! Their music is amongst my all-time favorites to play: lots of nifty chord changes that sound like they were composed on a PSG, or with it in mind. My only beef is that their entire discography is still not available on iTunes; would love to have their first record as well as the live one from the late 70s. At the moment I believe they're only available as super-expensive imports on CD through Amazon. _________________ Red Emmons D10 fatback #2246D with sweet Hugh Briley split cases, Black Emmons S10 #1466S, '73 Fender "Snakeskin" Twin Reverb, Peavey Nashville 400, Line 6 Pod XT, Fender 400, Fender Stringmaster Double-8, too many guitars, one bass! |

Please don't flame me..... Unlike many my age (55) I was schooled in traditional country and western swing by a country picking Dad from the time I was born. I had many years ot the greats (Buddy, Curly, Maurice, Weldon, Hal, Lloyd, etc) in my ears by the time I got to high school and was exposed to the country rock steel players by the older kids. Generally speaking I was not that impressed with what I heard, but JDC with PPL is the one that stood out and I really liked. _________________ Bill Cunningham

I was just listening to PPL's Two Lane Highway and John's playing. Sounds just a good and fresh as anything I hear today. His picking is clean and clear up to the tiny frets.
Add me to the list of admirers and those that JD inspired. |

Count me in amongst the John David Call fans. Being from Ohio, when PPL emerged on the music scene, the music was all over the Ohio airwaves and I fell in love with John's aggressive tone and innocent, playful style. And yes...my first real steel rig was a Sho-Bud D-10 running through a Fender Twin with JBL D-120's. Still have the Twin and the JBL's... |

Hi Gerry,
Do you have any more pics of the man to share?
Here's one from Homer, NY, last year of me and my idol.
Johnny's music helped me out a lot back in the 70's when I was semi-disabled. I like to say he got me off my a$$ and back on my axe. I made and embroidered the shirt he's wearing here. He kept telling me the one I made him back in about '78 didn't fit anymore, so the least I could do was replace it.
Here's the embroidery I did on the back yoke of it:
The front yokes have a dobro and a banjo.
Thanks for posting the nice pic.

Great photo! When I heard "Tears" in 1972 it was a major inspiration to play pedal steel. Thank you John David Call! |

I took up steel in 1976, and Pure Prairie League plus New Riders of the Purple Sage, were what I practiced with. Great music for sure. _________________ U12 Williams keyless 400

He should be inducted into the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame. He was an inspiration to a lot of us. |

According to the man, himself, he was supposedly nominated this year. Obviously, he was not inducted.
If any of his fans would like to PM me with a short note of why they think he should be inducted, I'll hard copy them and make sure they get in the right hands for next year. So please make sure all his fans know and get a note to me. The more the better, I would think. I'm due to call him soon, so I'll let him know we're standing behind him for 2014.
Thanks, Lynn _________________ Sho-Bud Pro II Custom, GFI Ultra SD-10, Fender Pro Amp, Fender Mustang II Amp, Morrell 8-string lap, Epiphone 6-string lap, Galveston reso, etc. |
