Topic: C6 tuning on Old National Tricone Square Neck Question |

Hello, I tuned my national to CEGACE (bottom to top)And was told that this tuning may create to much tension with the middle strings and damage the guitar. At the same time was told it was possible to use different gages to compensate? If anyone could help with this I would appreciate it immensely as I got hooked on this tuning. I've looked at a gauge chart but now I'm abit confused. Thanks for your time...

I use it on my 1927 Style 1 square neck I bought from Paul Warnick 12 years ago ...

I just stumbled upon a National tri-cone Style 1 squareneck this afternoon. I was in a little music store getting ready to head out the door and the owner said, "Oh, wait a minute. I forgot. You think you might be interested in this thing that came in?" He pulled an old case out from under a bunch of others and there it was.
All original, under the bed condition. I bought it. Serial number 669. |

Thats a sweet find with an early case. National serial numbers started at #100.

I know little to nothing about tri-cones, other than to be able to recognize them. I have an old model 27 (37?) Dobro that's a cannon. I did know that this one was a good buy, given its condition.
Anyway, I'll restring this Tri-Cone and then I might (not sure) take it to the Arlington TX Guitar Show this coming week where I will have a booth there. Perhaps I'll sell it there. But the thing is I've had this National for all of one day and I, again, don't know how rare they are or much about them. Would I ever want another and regret selling it? Questions, questions. |

a few years ago one of my inlaws should up at my house late at night, asking me if i wanted what was in the big black garbage bag...I was stunned to find an original 1927 National Tricone #217 ! She found in a dumpster in a warehouse basement in San Francisco! She was part of a cleaning crew at a social club cleaning out the basement. She new I played pedal steel & thought I would want it. The guitar was a little beat up but intact with only one very old string. the cones were loose and rattled around. I took it to a luthier had it set up. It's an awesome sound ! i love it....
