Topic: Fishman Tripleplay for Lap Steel? |

Just read about this amazing device (http://www.fishman.com/tripleplay) - did anybody try it with lap steel? I am visiting the US soon so would love to hear some views before looking for it in the music stores in Chicago.

Cool, Peter. Did you get one? Do you know if it works with more than six strings?
Does anybody know if it is already available in stores in eg Chicago, St Louis or Nashville where I will be heading? It seems not to have reached Europe yet.

Hi John,
The FTP pickup, like other synth-specific 'hex' pickups, by design operates with six strings only as what one is essentially doing is to send six separate (string) signals to a synth module (in the case of the FTP, it is basically triggering synth sounds from a 'soft synth' app in a computer)
The general idea and drawcard of the FTP is the fact that it has a wireless connection from the instrument to your computer, while Roland has been doing almost the same thing via a hardwired (cable) connection for about three decades, and in its case, connecting to a 'hard synth' unit, mostly also made by Roland.
In theory one can manufacture multi-string pickups to suit almost any number of strings on an instrument (and many people have been experimenting with things like that for quite a while) but it then leaves you with the problem of somehow communicating the output(s) of such a pickup to a suitable synth unit that is capable of making sense of your commands 
As far as FTP availability for Europe, there is also a lot of information about this on the Vguitar Forum and also on the the sister-site of Future Guitar Now...one thing to keep in mind is that the 'Europe' version of the FTP (not sure when or if that is currently available) I believe uses different transmitting frequencies in order the use available European airwave space and to minimise interferance.
Personally ( and yes I am involved in Roland stuff) I would think that the benefit of wireless connection of the FTP is somewhat negated if you're not a guitarist trying to leap about the stage while playing...presumably a bit difficult to do while playing a lap steel.. 
I have been using Roland (wired connection) synth stuff in association with slide (stand up) guitar projects for some years and am quite happy to talk to you more about that at any time if you're interested (PM me if you like).
While I know that there are many people out there who are very keen on the FTP concept and have been / are taking it to great lengths since it was released, for me the advantages do not outweigh the fact that I would have to become more of a computer programmer and be also prepared to drag around a laptop or iPad or worse with me everytime I play...I figure I already drag enough stuff around with me as it is!
Hence I do not own one myself..

The short answer is YES it does work with lap steel.
I work part time as a Rep for Fishman and have been demoing it on Guitar for a couple of months now. Its pretty cool. I don't have previous experience with other guitar midi pickups or controllers but from what i hear its a totally different ball game
Last night i hooked it up to my Asher Electro Hawaiian and had a lot of fun . Some sounds worked better than otheres . It sounded best when i mixed a synth sound with the lap going thru Guitar Rig. I was getting some cool sounds similar to the moog lap steel in some instances
