I saw a post of Together Again on You tube and someone made a comment about how Paul Franklin played it better than Tom Brumley. I know Paul reads this and is a member of the forum but Together again will always be Tom Brumleys Song He invented it and played it to perfection as far as I'm concerned Tom played it as good as it could be played. It is probably one of the most copied steel guitar songs this side of Steel Guitar rag ever made...& Paul is a great player& as I said on the post on the YT video Paul learned from the Tom Brumleys and John Hugheys. Paul played Lost in the feeling on Mark Chesnutts album He played it nearly identical to John Hughey and both rides are wonderful... But Paul has his own songs as well, Alan Jacksons albums I think are about all him.. Why can't people just say both are good??
I just don't understand why other peoples playing have to be compared to any other pro's they are all great players |

It's OK Bill - there are always people who have to put things in pidgeon holes and rate them.

I like reading youtube comments if I need a belly laugh now and then, other than that, it's hard to take anything seriously posted by anyone who posts under a pseudonym such as, "yourmomma10-4" and the like. |

So someone likes one version of a song over another. People will have their preferences. Disagreements like this aren't what I'd call earthshaking. There are much bigger issues with online commenting like true trolls and spambots.
youtube comments ... journalism?? There is no relationship between these. Anonymous online comments at sites like youtube and others are basically online graffiti. The prevalence of spambots and the ability of trolls to dominate discussions have gotten to the point where some major sites are starting to disable comments. For example, just this week, Popular Science generally disabled comments about its articles - http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2013-09/why-were-shutting-our-comments.
One less draconian solution is to insist that commenters post under their real names. Our forum realized this many years ago, and this is, in my opinion, why this forum is one of, if not the most, useful forums about music on the internet. |

I have an Album of Todd Brumley Tom's son. He does a full complete ride on Together Again and the tone and playing that Tom did was incredible. I'm not saying anything bad at all about Tom's original cut but I have heard Tom play that song with some very nice arrangements. Paul did a great job but this guy needs to do a little more research. Together Again is Tom Brumley. |

Both solos are good. It's all about ones interpreation of the song no onemusician will play the song like another. It's all about expression and what you want the instrument to say. |

Several years ago (80's) I went to the Brumley's country music show in Branson. Todd sang Together Again and when it came time for the ride, Todd said - Play it like you did on the record , dad. What a powerful moment ! It definitely is Toms song- he made it what it is. There have been many players who have made it their own , and I love their take on it also. But I'm sure glad Tom laid it down for all of us that give it a shot . Tony |

Either the first or second time I went to PSG convention (back when you could afford it).
I got the honor of meeting Tom Brumley, I still have that picture of 34 or 34 years ago.
I was thrilled to met the man who made me want to play a pedal steel guitar. Tom was one of the nicest pro players I EVER MET!. He acted like he knew me for years..He made me feel important..what a nice gentleman!. As I said in my original post Together again, Tom's Waltz,Apple Jack,Crying Time.. all Tom's masterpiece's,
He made many of us take notice of his expertise and plain good tasteful playing. I will ALWAYS be a Tom Brumley Fan! and no matter WHO plays these songs....

My original post was simply about Someone trying to own another pro's original ride.
Far as I'm concerned it is the ORIGINAL PLAYERS Song.
It was never about who played it best or who thought someone played it better. an old song "The In crowd"
had a line that said "But the Original is still the greatest". This Twere my point.
Together again was recorded in the 60's. When someone has 40+ years practice who wouldn't be able to put extras in? or pick it apart. JD Maness tore up Hello Trouble but was never compared with Tom B |

Without Tom there would have been nothing for Paul to emulate and expand on, and the loss would be ours. |

IMHO - , regardless as to who plays the song, no matter how great, good, bad or indifferent, when I think of or hear reference to "Together Again" it will forever be Tom Brumley playing, first and foremost that classic turn around in my memory. He has been imitated more than most other versions ever will - just IMHO. |

John Hughey told me once that a man ask him was he the one that played Look At Us on Vince Gill's song. John humbley replied, yes I am. The guy said, I can play that. John again humbley replied," lots of people can play that, but did you think of it."

i was at june jam '95 in lebanon. john played look at us and then following suit, lloyd, hal, paul,jeff, randy b., etc. all fell into place playing it beautifully. they did this on so many tunes their super calibre picking became boring. |

Bill, what you said about Tom is right. Don Rich introduced me to him in Pa at the Santa Fe Park. I worked with Buck and Don in Pa. for a 1 nighter. I had a great time! Don was a super pro. Later, Buck hired Tom and Don saw me in the crowd and motioned me to come back stage and there is where I met Tom. A super nice pro. I met Paul in Las Vegas when he was with Mel Tilles. Another super guy.
I heard that Buddy was impressed with Tom's approach to 'Together Again'. And he liked Ralph Moon a lot. We all did. Tom and Paul are super pickers in all our eyes. I'm so happy to say I heard them both tear it up nice. And of course all the other pros. We can consider ourselves lucky to have lived in the time to hear and see these pros. 15/20 years from now, new players will only hear 'about' these pros. Ted[/url] |

Personally I like to hear the not quite pro players play. We have a million recordings of pro's playing, rarely ever get to hear those players that for whatever reason didn't go pro due to having a family or business didn't want to be on the road.
If you never done it being n the road takes a special kind. (waking up in a bus full of guys is no fun) I have never understood why of all things a steel guitar convention can't have a day or just having other players mixed with Pro's.
Of course there are now shows and conventions where this happens. I know of a gospel music program here in Indiana,He has been off the air several times for not having money to operate the show,I talked to him and told him he needed to change his format a little and had some good ideas,of course he would rather go off the air than change... and I think the PSGC is like this in a lot of ways,they keep raising prices for admission and vendor space.. and declining attendance&vendors proves that people would rather spend their money going to other shows where they can see used pedal steels from several dealers and sellers and not cost an arm&leg sort of like K Mart not seeing Sam Walton until rolled over them they also thought no other show in town.. Well take note many other steel guitar events these days.. |
