I have a '37 Gibson EH-100 lap steel that was passed down to me from my father. The steel is a little beat up but plays wonderfully and basically sounds good, but I have to add a LOT of low end on my amp (Nashville 400). If I don't, it has a very thin sound. My little Rogue, on the other hand has a very full mellow sound with not nearly as much low end added. Of course it is not in the same league as the Gibson in any other way, playability, string spacing, scale, etc. Are the old Gibsons normally lacking in low end, or is it possible I have a bad capacitor inside or a pickup problem?

It's more likely you have something wrong with the pickup than anything else. The EH-100 I had did not have any problems with low end.

Sounds like a compromised coil ...

Because of the thousands of near parallel magnet wire windings ... The unit can still put out an AC signal ... But it will be thin sounding and low output ...

The EH 100s that I've seen have pickups similar to Charlie Christians ... Wound with # 38 ... So it should be putting out a big sound ...

Tom B. does very fine work ... http://www.rewindpickup.com/ ... Give him a holler
