This was interesting

We opened for a another country act at an outdoor venue. I was told by a couple of other guys in our band that the headlining act was very popular and that's why the event was so well attended. They also said the band didn't have a steel player.

Anyway, as I was setting up I noticed a group of young guys and a gal watching me from a few feet offstage, pointing at the steel and talking amongst themselves. Then they stayed there and watched as we did our set. It kinda seemed to me as if they had never heard a pedal steel played live before. I thought it was a little odd but just figured they were a part of the organization that put on the show or something like that.

Turned out they were the headlining act.

Now, I mention this NOT to suggest that my playing was so good. Trust me, in all honesty, it just isn't. I do OK, but that's about it.

No, I mention it because the headlining band obviously had not heard that much live steel before. Close-up. Oh, it was obvious they knew what it was, but I thought it was interesting.

I watched their show after we finished. They were really very good. Nice vocals. A lot of it was heavily dependent on distorted guitar.

If they're one of the new acts coming out of Nashville then they probably haven't been exposed to very much pedal steel. Wink

Lots of bands use the distortion effects to get the sustain that they could get from steel!

Played a couple of weeks ago in Maple Creek, a real honest western cowboy town and a young guy, while I was setting up asked me the proper name of my instrament. I told him and he asked me about pedals and knee levers and he gave me thumbs up and great comments after. I'm certainly not a top notch player but it was good to see interest in my most favorite instrament.

We played at a picnic this summer and a girl swore up and down that I played a Zither. She's seen one before. I also heard that there is a rumor going around that some Nashville country music artists have tossed around the idea of using pedal steel in some of their music, but they're not sure how it would sound, or if it would even work.

After I got my PSG I ran into a friend who is like myself a 6 string guitar enthusiast and actually quite a respectable player. I told him I got a pedal steel , he says" what's a pedal steel?oh yeah, is that the thing them old country guys sit up on stage and play?? Yeah, I've seen them before,them old guys are talented." Laughing

The only reason we have PSG players is because old guitar players want something somewhat like a guitar on stage they can sit down and play and leave that Marshall Stack and Pedal FX Rack home and just bring a an electric fan and PSG Seat to keep their Meds in. Laughing

My favorites:
We played a wedding in California and a girl came up to my singer and said "Your electric dulcimer player looks like Keefer Sutherland."
Another time we were in Beaumont, after the show a incredibly drunk girl came up to me and said "You play piano beautifully." I said, "It's not a piano..." she interrupted me and said "No, I know, I play piano."
She later stole my singer's wife's phone, then begrudgingly gave it back.

My wife came into the music room and said. That has an real whiney sound. (Fender 400 4+1 ) and added can't you get your regular guitar and play it ( Gretsch 5220 ) then she left. So I moved over to an 8 string MultiKord and started thumbpicking " Nine pound Hammer".
She yells back into the room. Now that sounds a lot better than that steel. You should sell that steel.
