I played a local benefit show. Here's the review from the Sonoma West Times:

Guitarmageddon (The the Best of the Best)
Every once in a while a show comes along that by the very nature of the players involved becomes a true happening. Guitarmageddon was a gathering of some the finest guitar slingers anywhere. They were all brought together last Saturday night by Kevin Russell, as a benefit for the Sebastopol Community Cultural Center. It was a truly amazing display of guitar virtuosity by veteran pickers, Steve Barbieri, Brendan Smith, Allen Sudduth, Gary Vogensen, Russ Gauthier, Michael Barclay, Volker Strifler and steel guitarist, Bobby Lee. I showed up half expecting to get my hair blown back by the volume of electric guitars being shredded, but was delighted that what I got was the tasty licks of some mighty fine pickers.
The evening began with Kevin Russell’s band, “The Rhythm Rangersâ€, which is already a collection of All Star players. With Blair Hardman on bass and Rick Cutler on drums, the driving force was solid all night. Harmonizing with Kevin was the ‘Forestville Songbird, Cory Woods, and Kirby Pierce plays keys. Rounding out the backup band is Russ Gautier, one of the founding members of the New Riders of the Purple Sage (a band I followed from the 70s), and Bobby Lee, perhaps the most knowledgeable steel guitarists in the business. Bobby not only plays the sweetest licks on that soulful instrument but he is the director of the Steel Guitar Forum, a website dedicated to that magical instrument. He is also a member of the European Steel Guitar Hall of Fame, a well-deserved honor. And all this was just the backup band.
Then came the fun part of the night where each player came up and play his two favorite tunes. Most of them opted for a couple of blues based songs, but despite the three chord form, the variety of styles was quite amazing. Steve Barbieri, who knows every classic rock lick ever recorded, played and sang his ass off. Gary Vogensen, who is currently playing with The Blues Broads, and has had a long and illustrious music career, wowed the crowd with the Ricky Nelson classic “Hello Mary Louâ€, while he battled with Bobby Lee to see who could play the best steel guitar licks. The ever dapper, Dr. Michael Barclay, (Psychologist by day, ‘old blues cat, by night), got a standing ovation for his blues chops and his husky vocals. He is the real deal. Ruminators guitarist, Allen Sudduth really got my attention with his incredible playing, and I never get enough of my pal, Brendan Smith of the Uncle Wiggly Band.
All these pickers have been playing in and around Sonoma County for over 40 years, and it was wonderful to see them up on stage performing for the sheer joy of playing (all donated their time). They are all the best of the best players in the universe, and then Volker Strifler add the cherry on the top of the night with a full set of dance music.
Wow what a night! Thanks Kevin Russell and all the wonderful guitar gods for the gift of music to all of us. |

I have to tell this to my friend Uli Rohde. He knows Volker Strifler very well. They both come from Heidelberg. How small the world is! _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |
