I think almost all of us put the legs in the pouches threads-in/rubber-out. I went through TWO leg pouches (bottoms getting punched out) before it dawned on me:
RUBBER CRUTCH TIPS DON'T PUNCH HOLES. So put them in threads-out/tips-in.
One person mentioned the possibility of tips staying in the pouch, but that's never happened yet. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

no can do, lane. ya see..my first leg in/out of the leg holder has a different rubber end, indicating it goes in the right rear hole and then the others sequentially fit the same leghole everytime. so i must be able to quickly scope my leg tips and thus, my plan of attack. we all have our routines.
i did put a wad of newspaper into the bottom of the leg holders at one time though to slow the destruction. |

Also, if the rubber tip is a bit loose, watch out! you'll have a fun time shaking it outa the bottom of the bag.
I have tough denim bags made for my BenRom. They last a bit longer hopefully _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

Bent, that hasn't happened YET.
Chris, I just put front legs to the left of the rods, left most to left, and the rear legs to the right, again the leftmost to the left. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Lay the bag on floor...Slide legs in starting with rear legs in the furthest holes. Front legs go in the 2 holes next to the pedal rods...install rods and legs as lane sayes. Pick up leg bag sideways by grabbing the pedal rods throught the bag, and lay in case
The idea is to never drop the legs into the bag from the top _________________ A.K.A Chappy. |

I put them in counter-clockwise. The rods go in the middle pouch. The right rear leg (facing the bottom of the guitar in it's case) goes in the far right pouch. The right front leg goes in the next pouch. The left front leg goes in the next pouch after the rods. And the left rear leg goes in the far left pouch.
I always put them in threads first. I just be careful. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Playing for 54 years and still counting. |

I've always put them in threads-in. After tearing holes in my first steel's leg bag (which, by the way, I still use) I learned not to drop them in from the top.
The rubber tips on the legs of my pre-RP Mullen are loose enough that I have to be careful not to pull them off when I'm taking the legs out of the bag. They'd never stay on if I put the legs in rubber-in.
(The problem with pulling off the tips, incidentally, is that each rubber tip has a washer inside it for the leg tubing end to come up against. This is a great idea for keeping the tubing from penetrating through the rubber (which has happened to me more than once on other steels)--but hunting for those washers on a cluttered, dark stage is a pain in the @#%*!) |

Another idea might be to use threaded rubber caps on the threaded end. Screw the cap on before you pack up and off when you get ready to setup again...just a thought. |

I just slide the legs in threads first as the bag is laying flat on the floor. I never hold the bag up and drop them in. I have some markings an the outside of the bag, more from rubbing while in the pedal bar compartment of the case, but no wear through spots. My bag is the original that came with my Carter 14 years ago. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . As it is easier and cheaper to replace a lost rubber leg tip than it is to replace a messed up threaded leg plug, I have always put them in the leg bag threaded end first. To ensure better protection for the threaded ends and the bottom of the leg bag, I cut some 1"x1"x1" cubes of heavy grey foam and using the legs like a ram-rod down a cannon barrel, shoved the foam cubes all the way to the bottom of the slots in the leg bag. Once they are in there, they are IN THERE! My routine for packing up is, pedal rods in the center slot, RF leg next to rods on right,LF leg next to rods on left, RR leg outside right, LR leg outside left.

Buy a D2f leg bag by Tom Palmer. Toughest nylon/cloth/poly leg bag I've ever seen. I dare anyone to punch a hole in one. That being said putting your legs in when the bag is sideways on the floor is the smart thing. |

And, like tips-in, an obvious solution that had never occurred to me. The only people I'd ever watched tear down did it bag vertical, slide 'em in threads-in. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Gene Fields told me that denim leg bags will outlast vinyl ones by a long shot. I bought a couple from him many years ago and they're still going strong.
I put my legs in threads first and have had no problems. I also keep all four legs the exact same height so it doesn't matter which leg goes where. |

What kind of places are you guys playing, where you have to scram so fast?

I guess some of these places have crooked floors, too... |

Just like bamboo flyrods. Ferrules in first because the bag protects the nickel silver ferrules just as the bag protects the leg threads. Slide the flyrods sections in the bag slots, never drop. _________________ Chris Lucker
