well, in my infinite wisdom I decided to take apart my new (to me) push pull Emmons that I bought from Bobby Reed. I am just curious about how it all works and since I have my fatback to use as an example of how to put things back together I figured I'd take the plunge down the rabbit hole. Things are going fairly smoothly so far, I have disassembled a lot of it underneath and cleaned it up a bit, but in putting it back together I have not been able to get the return springs to expand as much as they are expanded on my fatback guitar. Is there a secret to how to pull them to the right tension ? I have needle-nose pliers and an allen wrench for the collar, but maybe I am just not strong enough to really pull them tight. That being said, how tight do they really need to be ?

also i tried to remove the changer but couldn't figure out how to do it so I just went in there with Q-tips and cleaned it up. over-all the guitar is pretty clean so I am hoping that changer removal is not necessary.

| Besides the obvious screws necessary to remove to get the changer out- there are 2 more that are under the lip on the end plate that need to come out. I use an allen wrench w a handle on it to set the tension on the return springs by inserting it in the last loop of the spring and pulling it toward the L bracket stop. |

Karen, I usually pull them until the drop finger hits the body of the guitar and then about 1/4" further. Do this with the proper string guages on. Probably no need to remove the changer unless it is bound up. I'd just oil it real good with the strings off. 3 in One will work. Good luck.

so it sounds like having strings on before re-aseembling all the push-pull rods is the way to go ?
Been cleaning with bicycle degreaser. works like a charm.

| Just enough tension for the lower fingers to snap back nicely when released- kinda hard to describe but not enough tension will make the guitar feel mushy and too much will make the lowers too stiff. |
